Joe Louis fought his fair share of cab drivers and nobodies, and won the title off Jim Braddock who was at the time ducking number 1 contender Schmeling. Even though Calzaghe won a vacant title he still beat a more capable fighter to do it.

Calzaghe has gone on record saying he doesn't want to attempt to break Louis's record, and will be looking at light heavy after he fights Kessler.

Calzaghe has not been the champ for 20 defences, and it certainly isn't disingenuous to debate Calzaghe's place at the top pre-Lacy. So he won't be breaking louis's record, put simply.

If he wins though he will make his own legacy more sure, and could be on the way to being a HoFer himself.

Incredibly ****** of "the slapper" to be making plans about what he's gonna do when he has beat Kessler. If Calzaghe is not 110% focused on this match I can assure You it will be his last - and maybe 110% won't even be enough!

Louis lost approximately three years to the war and didn't defend as frequently when he returned; however, he does hold the heavyweight record at 7 defenses in one year.

if the average is 6-7 times, then by definition of average, he should have had 66-77 defenses. that's how you compute an average

who cares if Calzaghe beats Kessler.

the important thing to do would be educating the public on how winning a strap does not mean ****, and explain that Hopkins did not even come close to Hagler or Monzon in terms of defenses and Calzaghe did not defend THE championship 20 times.

Agree entirely Wmute on Hop and Cal. Entirely.

As to Louis, you're both slightly shooting from your ass but ES is closer. Louis fought once between 1942 and 1946 and that bout was for war bonds (i.e. the Army gave him a one night out). From June 1937 when he won the title to March 1942 (when he left for the war), he defended the title 21 times; that's slightly more than four defenses per year at his peak. Had the war not occurred, and Louis not lost to say a prime Bivins, he probably gets close to forty defenses.

yeah when i read bout these supposed records i get really pissed.

I was just noting that the definition of average implies that if you multiply average defenses times years, you get total defenses.

There should be no argument that champs use to defend more often in the past. btw everyone was fighting more often.
