Because his praise is mostly from his 20 title defense and beating Tito and Oscar.
The 20 title defenses were against average competition at best. Tito had some success at Middleweight so its still a good win in my book. But its not a GREAT win because Tito was still a blown up welterweight. Same goes with Oscar, who had no business fighting at Middleweight. He got beat twice by a natural Middleweight in Taylor who is very ordinary.
First of all, 20 consecutive title defenses is a tremendous accomplishment no matter who you are facing, and secondly, I'm not so sure how "average" Bernard's competition was during his string of defenses. Half (10) of those challengers were former, current, or future world champions (WBC, WBA, or IBF), and he went 10-0 against them, knocking out 7 of them. As far as the two bouts with Taylor, I have a tough time saying that Hopkins "lost" those bouts. I guess my main point is that I didn't need B-Hop's dismantling of Tarver to prove to me that he is an all-time great.
hopkins did better against RJJ than toney did. Toney in his prime was a tremendous fighter though. I got to give it to hopkins though cause he has fought the better competition hands down
Toney got schooled at MW by Nunn. I think it's a pick 'em.
Nunn was KTFO, I guess that was a nice schooling Nunn was doing good in the first half of the fight but he was losing the second half of the fight, also Nunn was a great boxer when Toney fought him.
Toney beats the younger Hopkins 10 out of 10 times, the older Hopkins beats Toney 5 out of 10 times.
BTW James Toney was one of the best middleweights I've ever seen.
Toney is something special. It really makes what RJj did to him that much more impressive. Every time I watch Toney fight I think to myself, "How exactly did RJj destroy this guy?". If Roy wasnt so dominant, I would be making excuses for Toneys loss.
If I hadnt seen the fight with my own eyes, I would laugh at anyone that told me that anyone could make a prime James Toney look bad. I still cant really grasp it because in my view James Toney is one of the top 5 greatest defensive fighters of all time, and one of if not the best inside fighters in history.
Dont get me wrong, B-hop is good, but James Toney is remarkable. Prime for prime, James Toney wins by a wide UD every time. He might have been a step below RJj, but that is still 5 steps above the next best fighter of their generation.

Toney was not 100% in the Jones fight but dancers always troubled Toney a little, I think Leonard, Hopkins & Nunn would've also beaten the James Toney Jones fought.
