I remember watching Sweet Pea vs Buddy Mcgirt, live at the garden.

And, watching the vid of that fight was even more spectacular.

How would he have faired those days if he had some true KO power?

It certainly was sweet watching him.

Willie Pep was a less refined defensive wizard as well.

Duran destroys Sweet pea. Duran would not let Sweet pea set the pace. Hagler,Leonard,Barkley, Moore, and many others tried to set the pace with Duran and failed. At lightweight, Duran was a monster. I say Duran takes it via 9th round TKO!

Whitaker set the pace with every fighter he fought, although Roberto was quite relentless.

Whitaker had the right jab, fast hands, defense, intelligence and grit to outfox Duran to a decision victory. You have to remember, Sweet Sal Mamby and Lou Bizarro gave Duran problems with lateral movement and the jab (though Bizarro was more interested in holding than fighting). Both guys were taller and rangier than Pea, but neither nearly approached his ability. DeJesus also gave Duran hell with the left hand (I believe he dropped him with the left hook) and his slick boxing skills.

Duran ain't stopping Pernell Whitaker. If Trinidad couldn't manage to get a shot Whitaker out of there I don't think Duran could do it to Whitaker at his peak...and yes I think that logic is acceptable. This is a fight that goes the distance and it is one where I don't think Duran is named the victor. I think Duran would be frustrated early, ultimately finding his man later in the fight only to lose too many rounds to completely rally.
