Is the HW Division a Joke?

I grew up in the late 60's and early 70's, the "Golden Era" of heavyweight boxing, and watched most of those legendary fights on ABC's Wide World of Sports, and let me tell you something.....they said the same thing then, only the "Golden Era" they were talking about back then was back in the 30's, 40's, and 50's, and even the early 60's. In fact, I can't remember a time when people weren't bitching about the heavyweight division. They were saying the same **** back when Tyson was marching through the heavyweights, and then unified...."He wouldn't be able to do this back in the day, he'd be KO'd by (insert legendary heavyweight here) in the first minute of the fight".

Well, I thought it sounded silly then, and do now, too. In fact, this may be one of the least "****ty" divisions I remember. It's not the best, but certainly not what everyone is claiming. I think that, on any given day, there are at least a dozen fighters who could beat any one of the other dozen at the toss of a coin. The only one who's probably not going to get beaten any time soon is Wlad Klitchko (or his brother...I really don't think there's anyone alive who can KO that guy, and you can't beat him any other way), and there's almost always been a single ruling power in the divion. Foreman, Ali, Tyson, Lewis, etc.

The only thing that bothers me about the heayweight division is the lack of activity. Other than that, I like it just fine. Not as good as some of been, maybe, but not bad at all.

Lets remember Liston, Patterson, Chuvalo, Ali, Fraizer, Foreman, Quarry and others, all who are far superior to anyone in the HW division currently.

Tyson was mowing down opposition because his managers/trainers were picking the right "opponents", at least until fairly late in his career. And even then it happened to a degree (ever wonder why Tyson never fought Foreman? He and his entire team were scared ****less of Big George). Don't get me wrong, Tyson was great at what he did, but his second biggest asset was his intimidation factor, the one he got from knocking out a lot of 2nd rate fighters. Yep, he unified, yep, he was a great fighter, but what happened the first time he got into the ring with someone whom he was unable to intimidate? He didn't know what to do with someone throwing more punches at him than he threw back, and he got discouraged and KO'd. If he'd had as much heart as he had ability and talent, he'd have retired undefeated....of course it wouldn't have been a bad thing if he hadn't been a psychopathic ******.

In my opinion, a prime Tyson gets KO'd by a prime Klitchko (either one) within a few rounds.

i'd have to disagree with that. tyson had great head movement, great accuracy, and was just too good for the klits. tyson would have gotten to wlad, and it would not have been a good thing. vitali would have lasted longer, but still would have succumbed to what we know as prime tyson.

Any version of Tyson would likely lose to this Wlad; not that this matters for anything.

Wlad is clearly better than Lewis and Holmes ever were. It's not close either.

I'm sure Lennox and Holmes would both get knocked out by Ross Puritty too...

He did have great head movement. Great handspeed, great power, great conditioning, an uncanny ability to move into the kitchen and unload a lethal combination with lightning speed and frightening accuracy...about the only things he lacked were heart and brains. But I don't think he'd have beaten either Klitchko. Not just because he was a spineless idiot, but also because he wasn't quite big enough. A good big guy beats a good smaller guy about every time. And even if that weren't the case, like I said...Tyson falls apart in the face of any serious opposition, and neither of the Klitchkos would've just laid down for him.

the purrity fight was when wlad was very young and had never been past the 6th round. he was easily beating purrity and just totally ran out of gas. his corner stopped it becuz he had nothing left
