in my eyes tyson should of won by tko, and i see why don king appealed to that right after the fight
Tyson shouldn't have won by TKO, that's bull****. If you look at the fight, the ref makes a proper count and Tyson doesn't stay in his corner prompting the ref to look at him for one second and motion him back to the nuetral corner. I counted 9 seconds exactly with one second of real time for the ref to motion Tyson back to the nuetral corner. Look at the fight again........
At the time it was the greatest upset and I guess still should be because of the odds invloved. All these years later though I'm not as suprised because Tyson is one of the most overrated fighters in the history of boxing. Someone said Douglas ruined Tyson......TYSON RUINED TYSON. He was a selfish, self absorbed, psychotic child that never understood what he had until it was gone. He never grew up, plain and simple. Watching Douglas beat his ass as well as Holyfield makes me smile every time. It's basically good triumphing over evil in real life.

Overrated? Please, why dont you win a title at age 20,get all that money, fame, girls, deals, and be normal,no one could, especially at that age and his upbringing, the **** Tyson went through was enough, all that just added to it,it ****ed up his mentality
I will never forget when I heard Tyson lost. I was fairly young and believed Tyson to be undefeatable.
As for Tyson's demise, the vast majority of the blame has to fall on Tyson himself. An adult should be held responsible for his own actions and choices, and Tyson has made some very poor decisions in his life.
But having said that, Tyson is also developmentally disabled and was clearly taken advantage of at ever step of his life and career ever since "Cus" D'Amato died. Tyson was a troubled person who needed good people looking out for his best interest. That obvioussly didn't happen.
So while I don't necessarily feel sorry for Tyson, I do hope the story of his life ends well.
Well, the fight should've been over when Douglas hit the canvas. I counted 13 seconds from the time he hit to the time he got up. The ref did a terrible job and that should've been a KO victory for Tyson.
My spine shivers after every round. Especially when LAMPLEY, MERCHANT and LEONARD called it. AFter the first round, Merchant said "...and i actually GAVE that round to DOUGLAS!!!"
chilling. The whole fight was just unbelievable.
I was thinking of some other moments in boxing that give me chills. Corrales-Castillo ROUND 10, Hagler-Hearns ROUND 1, and Louis-Shmelling ROUND 12. Those moments in boxing were beyond amazing and broke every expectation or assumption any fan had ever made on those fights.
But those dont even compare to Douglas-Tyson
I cant even watch that fight i feel sick when its on!
Im a big Tyson fan but I give a man his due where its deserved and Douglas definitley deserved his win. The count appeal was just King desperatly making a play not to lose his cash cow. Tyson never trained properly, underestimated Douglas and paid the price for it.His corner were garbage and had couldnt tell him how to counter Douglas's jabbing so by the end he was just like a punching bag for Douglas.
Tysons not the kinda guy who'd want pity and I've never once heard him complain that he was robbed in that fight. Some people will buy whatever theyre sold. Watch the fight again there was no way Tyson was unfairly counted, the refs counts not the same as a stop watch count. If the count was wrong for Tyson then surely it was wrong for Douglas too but the difference is Douglas got up.
I watched it again, too. First time since I saw the fight live, and my opinion hasn't changed. Tyson was never overrated. He was really good at what he did in the ring, but I think Douglas was the first heavy to refuse to be intimidated by his power, and his ability to get inside quick and unload powerful combinations with such frightening accuracy. And I think Douglas was also the first one who knew how to keep Tyson at bay, and the first one to show that Tyson didn't do well when someone was willing to give him a serious fight.
However, I will say this: If Tyson hadn't been such a psychopathic ******, he'd have quite possibly been the second heavy to go undefeated his entire career, and wouldn't be the ****ing black-mark on the boxing world he is today. He had the tools, speed, and the ability. He was just so ****ed up mentally that it's amazing he lasted as long as he did. The night he bit Holyfield's ear off should've been the last time he was ever allowed into a boxing ring as a professional fighter.
Douglas could have gotten up much sooner, he just chose to stay down and rest while the ref counted. If they ref would have counted faster, Douglas would have gotten up faster. I think it is likely that Tyson would have lost that fight even if he did come in prepared.
Douglas was a man on a mission that night, nothing was going to stop him that night. Watching it back you can tell from the opening bell who would win the fight.
That uppercut that Douglas knocked out Tyson with was possibly the most brutal uppercut I have ever seen anyone take. The finishing combo off of the uppercut was just beautiful.
Douglas fought a perfect fight that night, he kept Tyson at bay with his jab, didnt let Tyson back him up. Magnificant.
I also liked the commentary by Bob Sheridan. He calls fights like fights should be called, its like watching an old school fight with Don Dumphy calling it.
