Leonard ruled during the 1910's very excellent fighter. Ross is one of the forgotten greats, he was the first to be champ at lightweight and welterweight at the same time.

well that was when he was older. he grew up in a ***ish ****** in chicago, and by age 14 his father was murdered, mother went insane, and brothers in an orphanage. he worked doing small crimes for al capone before he started boxing. he fought in guadalcanal during WWII. while he was on the island he ko'd the native champion who was 260lbs and offered a spot as cheif, and in one battle he is said to have single-handedly killed 22 japanese soldiers, and save the few men he was with because they got separated. in the process he was shot through the ankle but still carried a wounded soldier on his back to safety. Because of the wound and malaria, he became addicted to morphine and then heroine, kicked the addiction, and spent hte rest of his life advocating against drugs. he didn't back away from jack ruby, and old freind, when he was on trial for killing lee harvey oswald, he testified as a charactor witness for him. later he ran guns to israel int their fight for independence and attempted to organize an army of ***ish-american army veterans to go fight. his brother was a great ameteur fighter and was said to be better than barney, but their mother said no, one was enough. he also spoke perfect yiddish and hebrew.

I just finished reading his biography

I also remember the morphine addiction story. What happened to the ***ish fighter after the 1950's cause they kinda fell off. They were fierce up until the 1950's.Rossman and Rosenblatt are the only ones I can think of recently that made any noise.

well there's some guys coming up now, for example dmitriy salita who I follow pretty closely. also yuri foreman, roman greenberg and zab judah. but the holocaust kind of killed the flow of ***s to this country, 6 million is a HUGE blow to a minority who's population is now only about 14 mill. the poor, hungry ***s from russia and poland were massacred during the pogroms earlier. and many ***s see pugalism as something for thugs, so when ***s as a whole in this country got their money... that would be my explination. also do you know how hard it is to convince a ***ish mother to allow you to take up boxing? she would KICK YOUR ASS, look at EVERY SINGLE ***ish boxer during that pre- 50's era and they all changed their names so their mothers wouldn't find out they were boxing haha.

Yes, after World War II the United States economy picked up allowing for great job opportunity. Many soldiers took advantage of the G.I. Bill after the war. Lastly, many probably grew tired of fighting since they just came out of a real war.

And similar/same to what you said:
Many ***ish boxers have the same story of not being allowed to fight so they changed their name so their parents would not find out… when and if their parents did find out, they showed them how much money they were making and were sent back into the ring, but usually with one condition: to take that money, save a good amount, and hopefully get out when you were still young enough, healthy enough to go on and get yourself a college education...many did, as well as opening up their own business.

Good program on this called "Duke it out, ***ish boxers"...usually seen on ESPN Classics
