Kimbo is famous for winning street fight under boxing rules (no kicks, knees etc.).
Obviously, Mercer is 10x boxer what Kimbo is.
If Mercer learned few basic stuff, like Kimbo did, he would won that fight.
If Mercer just jabbed from beggining with a lot of moving, and tried to keep Kimbo at distance, he would have a decent shot at wining.

Kimbo prepared himself, Mercer didn't... And that's it.

Have you guys even seen Mercer as of now? He's really fat, I'm not sure of his weight.

This does show how effective you can be in a fight with just a few months of ground training. Just becoming familiar with a few submissions and spending some time working on positions will give you a HUGE advantage in a fight when your opponent has never done any ground training.

Or how ineffective you can be if you don't gain a cursory knowledge of the ground game. Mercer actually put himself into the hold! I just watched the "fight" on you tube. Nothing landed flush, the "strikes" from both sides were wild and ineffective, and the fight ended with a headlock.

It wasn't even kind of exciting. Kimbo's going to need a lot of work to compete in the UFC, Pride or any of the other MMA Organizations, and he definitely wouldn't make it as a boxer. He'd be a poor mans Shannon Briggs at best!

As for Ray Mercer? Well, at his age he's just a poor man's Ray Mercer, and lets not forget that while he did have a couple of great fights against name fighters, that was when he was in his prime, and his decline in Boxing was swift.

My point exactly, you just missed it. Part of why BJJ is so effective is that if you do what comes 'naturally', it plays into the hands of the BJJ stylist. EVERY time someone gets tapped, it's because they MADE A MISTAKE. The other guy may have forced the mistake, but the mistake was made.

As for the strikes being innefective, you are correct. Kimbo, a BJJ novice, tapped out a man WITHOUT landing any good strikes. He also was not hit with any effective strikes himself.

It was not a headlock, it was a choke hold. A guillitine choke, to be precise. Putting a standard side headlock on a guy with grappling knowledge is actually a big mistake. By doing so you are basically giving him your back. The back mount is the most dominant position in BJJ.

Speaking of Morrison, as I posted on another thread: he did not win an MMA fight, he won a boxing match with 4oz gloves.
