Not to mention it did a lot for Ward's bank account (mainly the third fight).

It was overdue. Good for him to get a nice payday. I see it as kind of like when actors get an overdue Academy Award for something they did in the past and their whole careers rather then the current film. Gatti and Ward had a whole lot of better fights than their last two bouts against each other, I wish they had gotten more of the praise and money earlier than they did in their overrated trilogy.

Getting beat up isn't so bad in itself for the fighter. It doesn't bother the fighter as much as it bothers the viewers, other than the consequences in the career, or even long term damage of course.
But every fighter have been beaten up 100's of times in the gym, so it's not like it's something new for anybody to recieve some asskicking.

Most of the time, it's in the gym the damage is done.
I bet my ass that neither Ward nor Gatti regrets the war in the first fight.
They got all the respect they craved so long for, so it was worth it.
And they probably loved the fight themself.
It's not the fans decision to fight, and if the fighters we love decide to fight, we as fans should support them and buy the PPV's even if we know they're gonna get beaten up.

The fighters do all they can to please you and me, so the least we can do is to support them to the end, whatever end that might be.
If your favorite fighter is poor and only fight for money, why wouldn't you buy his fight?
