Kudos for pointing out aspects of that fight in Dirrels defense.
That's being said, I'd suggest that no one watches this kid fight again. I can't imagine anyone being excited by the way he fought last night...unless they were related to him.
Last night we got to see the difference between a MAN who understands every facet of the game in Malignaggi, and a boy who knows what works for him but doesn't see the big picture.
Dirrel is in the sport to make money to support himself and his family. The way to do that is obviously by giving the crowd what they want to some degree, which in turn gets you a strong supportive fan base. He ain't looking to good in that area with that bull**** showing.
If he intends on doing that every fight for the rest of his career then I hope he retires undefeated against the Curtis Stevens of the world, but I also hope he never highlights an ESPN, HBO, or Showtime card otherwise.
There are more than a few fighters who could have executed the gameplan Dirrel employed last night. I think Oscar De La Hoya could have done that in his early career, I think Paul Malignaggi could have done that to N'Dou last night.
That performance was just sad though. -

Again, though, I think you missed a big part of my point.....Dirrel KNEW Curtis well, he knew what could and likely would happen.......Andre will fight someone else and DEFINITELY show much better offense and skills. I really believe thatComment

No, we were in studio. But, for the records, I actually never saw most of the fights I called and two....many say it is easy to call a fight that u are already know the result of but in my case it has no bearing because it is my job to say what BOTH fighters should or need to do to win...I think I was akle to do that for both guys, even the guy I knew would lose outin the end. What fight did u see?Comment

Great post, Iceman. I don't think gringo misunderstood you, though, and I agree with him. We can't blame Dirrel for how he fought, I'd have done the same if I were him. But as fans we have a right to decide what we want to watch from our couches because we pay our HBO bill every month and we want something in return for it. Dirrel does not have that something and I hope HBO never wastes the spot on him again, unless he comes back up the hard way. He'll make it to ESPN if he keeps winning and if he lands a title shot a few years down the line, I'll take a fairly disinterested look at it.Comment

I thought he fought a very skillfull fight and reminded me of Roy Jones a bit.
He showed great speed and that he could land at will .
It was a good fight for him but a boring fight for the fans.
I first saw him during the Olympics and liked his style so i will keep watching to see how he evolves.Comment

Ice, you should also remember that it's guys like us who help promote the sport, even though we've never earned a penny from boxing in any capacity. We're the ones out here telling people about new fighters that HBO will be showing soon and helping collect interest. Everytime I get another guy to give modern boxing another chance, a Dirrel-Stevens on the card only hurts that cause. Fortunately for me I didn't try to sell this card on any friends or acquaintances, I watched it alone on Sunday morning replay.Comment

That is actually the dilemma that faces ALL boxers of above average skill...do u use your skills to the best of your ability or do you sacrifice some fo them, and risk a loss, to make yourself appealing to more people and, as a result, make more money?? Believe me, It's easy to say one thing but when you are in there staring down that danger...it can be a tough spot. I always use this analogy: "You often find yourself scared to jump head first into water you think might be very, very cold."Comment
