By Sammy Rozenberg - The Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey, saw Sultan Ibragimov (21-0-1, 17KOs) regain the stronghold of Eastern European fighters by unseating Shannon Briggs (48-5, 42KOs), the only American heavyweight champion, by a twelve round unanimous decision to win the WBO heavyweight title. The scores were 119-109, 117-111 and 115-113.
This fight was a perfect example that bigger does not necessarily translate into better. Briggs, who weighed in at a career high 273-pounds of muscle, was no match in the ring for the physically mediocre looking Ibragimov who weighed 221. Briggs resembled a body builder, while Ibragimov has the body of a normal guy on the street.
The fight was a cat and mouse batter. Briggs stood flat-footed while throwing a lazy jab at Ibragimov, who kept his distance in the early rounds. The quicker Ibragimov was easily able to avoid the telegraphed big punches of Briggs and jumped in with ease to land his own punches before his opponent could even think about countering. [details]
That ref should never judge a championship fight again!!!
he's a discrase to boxing and makes me wanna kill someone tonight
Wait... what?
What the **** did the Ref do? He didn't actually do anything of consequence the whole fight. There wasn't a single clinch that had to be broken and the only thing he had to do was wipe Brigg's gloves off after they fell together.
he threw next to nothing and only threw jabs most of the time... He really does suck!!! YEAH, I told Crold that he is a bum, and he ignored my comments!!! I'M right!!! Awesome
