I would also agree with that. The days of "great white hopes" and pseudo-eugenics in boxing commentary are hopefully long behind us. I juest read about Max Schmeling against Joe Louis (Beyond glory is the name of the book) and it's shocking some of the garbage that very respected writers of the day came out with.
How RACIAL is Boxing? (2007)

Lou DiBella commented/inferred on ESPN in a showdown with Joe Rogan that UFC has seen success because of the fan base of White males it appeals to.
(I have made similiar comments like this myself here on the forum.)
What is the truth about race and fighting sports - in particular; Boxing?
Would Boxing be hurting like it is if it had as many White champions and superstars as it has non-White champions and superstars?
Is the sport really a victim of racial politics as Teddy Atlas has suggested?
What is the story here?..
I think it is a silly argument. Whites dominate boxing look at the Heavyweight Champs all white.Comment

I think its more a case of the fans needing a great heavyweight champ, white, black or whatever. I'm not denying that anytime there is a new "great white hope" in the ascendency there is a lot of press and hype but in my opinion people would sooner see the rebirth of a mike tyson than a rebirth of tommy morrison.
I can only speak from my experience in the uk but the boxing coverage over here is ****, unless the fight is a superfight or involves some domestic interest there is absolutely no attempt to sell the fight and half the time i end up checking the listings to see if they're actually showing it.
There are a lot of great fighters out there but the sports coverage over here doesn't seem to care unless they're great heavyweights??Comment

There have been very few good American white boxers in the last 50 years, and that has caused boxing to be seen by many as a sport in which black boxers are naturally better than white boxers. Many people really believe that.
For some reason the media gives us the impression that all the good fighters are black, by ignoring the top white boxers in Britain and Europe. I find everywhere in boxing discussions the belief that blacks are naturally better keeps coming up.
Some people in North America refuse to believe white fighters are really good, no matter what they do. If a white fighter is 43-0, they'll say his opponents haven't been any good. If a white boxer defeats a black boxer, then the black boxer wasn't any good, but before the fight the same people had picked the black boxer to win!
Boxing ability has nothing to do with race. It has everything to do with training, desire to win, natural talent, diet, technical skill, faith in oneself, perseverance and heart.Comment

i noticed on 24/7 and infact nearly all the running up to the fight....
that all the black folks said that Mayweather should win, and all the white folks said O-DLH was gonna win.... and i wanted to O-DLH to win too... so maybe i'm racist too. I dunno! i've confused myself.
Perhaps the fans would want to see someone box, who they relate too. If a black boxer comes on tv screaming about the ****** blah blah blah, then i'm not gonna be interested. But if a white boxer comes on with a similar background to myself, then i'd be more inclined to like him.
Perhaps thats got a role to play?Last edited by DELETED ACCOUNT 06; 05-26-2007, 12:40 PM.Comment

From what I have read, Rappers sell most of the records to "white" kids.
Joe Louis, Ali, and Tyson are three of the biggest names in Heavyweight history and they were (if you did not notice) of dark complexion.
Oscar vs. Floyd had huge numbers, both have a tint to there skin.
NFL, NBA, a good portion are “Black”
One of the most popular athletes even today is JORDAN.
I also hear that Kobe and maybe few others are selling more than Yao in his home country.
What about the “white” sport of GOLF, their biggest star is of color.
Serena Williams is still one of the most popular athletes in tennis.
PEOPLE NEED TO GET OVER THIS **** ABOUT THE "COLOR" OF ONE'S SKIN.
WHAT ABOUT "EYE COLOR", DOES ANYBODY (OTHER THAN THE ****S) REALLY CARE TO MUCH IF A BLUE EYED PERSON DATES A BROWN EYED?
WE ALL HAVE ONE COLOR INSIDE, REDLast edited by Benny Leonard; 05-26-2007, 12:48 PM.Comment

You tend to like the guys you can relate to, especially in boxing. For example I relate to Ricky Hatton who has suffered from the same dispiriting and crushing gloom and disappointment as I have, being a lifelong supporter of Manchester City Football Club...Comment
