Here is a good article on that: http://www.ironlife.com/mag/issue6/shin.shtml

And to clarify, are you saying that you should get hit in the head/chin on purpose, and harder and harder over time, to get a better ability to take a punch?

sorry if i sound ignorant but yes...because look at guys who never get hit and when they finally taste a big punch they fall fast like roy jones jr.

wouldnt guys who have taken more punches be used to them ?

there is a scientific side to all this if i could be arsed looking it up,at the end of the day i think its based on these things:

          jaw and skull bone strength
shoulder and neck muscles to support the head
natural ability to take a punch

you cant get used to being hit in the chin, everybodys brain gets sent the same message to shut down when it is in danger, alot of it is chance

No no, your not ignorant. It's a good question. I look at it this way, you will get hit if you spar. Granted, not as hard as in a real fight, but you will get hit. And if you allow yourself to be hit hard and solid on purpose you will most likely suffer brain damage long term. Also, I have never heard of any fighter doing that. If it really was a good training tool, you would have guys who do it saying it's a part of their training.

And for Muay Thai, my instructor does not recommend conditioning our shins with trees or bats. We kick the 'banana bag' alot. It's a hard, hanging bag that goes all the way to about an inch above the floor. It's not solid like a tree, but it's not fun to kick the **** out of it. And we use shin guards when we spar and leg kicks are allowed.

Azza just posted a very good answer too.

but i was watching a thailand docu film and they said its a common practice to make the bones dense and the knuckles and shins bones harder.

wolffs law or something like that.

I reckon you should just let someone hit you on the point of the chin with a sledgehammer. It will toughen it up over time... honest.

thats 1 of the many reasons thai people are considered insane

being hit in the chin cant make your chin harder come on its pretty much common sense

arturo gatti for example,in his prime his chin was great, but everytime he got hit his chin didnt get stronger,if that was the case he would be invinsible by now and baldomir wouldnt have been able to put him down, when he was young he had heart hunger and determination and quite possibly very strong bones, but with age and the amount of punches he has taken his chin weakens and now hes on the edge of retirement

that explains why boxers try NOT to get hit...being hit in the chin especially on purpose multiple times will do nothing but weaken your jaw and shorten your career as a boxer

good point makes sense look at MAYORGA he had the toughest chin but after the trinidad fight it wasnt the same he took to many shots and then oscar dropped him easy.

the chin only has such a long shelf life i guess.
