and another thing, we dont have to save boxing. IT IS NOT DYING! come to mexico and youll know that boxing is just fine, actually here it has been getting bigger this year.
Save Boxing: Smaller Gloves, Smaller Ring

I think the gloves are just fine exept maybe make it 8oz throughout the weight classes, a smaller ring might help though as some "master boxers" get by on running the whole fight.Comment

in dempsey's era they used 4 ounce gloves this is why knockdowns were plentiful. smaller gloves deliver greater impulse and can sneak in little gaps in the guard
i completely agree with you however it has been 'proven' that larger gloves cause less damage. i'm not sure how they could possibly prove this unless they are refering to superficial damage such as cuts and bruises. they have not taken into account that fights last longer when big gloves are worn. in my opinion overthe course of the fight a fighter would take more damage.Comment

Mainly cos they are bloodthirsty mammals.
Why dont we revive the roman empire and bring back gladiators?
That would destroy MMA, loads of people would watch it,
Does it make you a sicko for watching it tho?
Yes.
There are ethics involved in this,
MMA is like BDSM ****, for people who like to take it that little bit further.Comment

I don't remember what gloves Ali was using when he fought I think it was Jurgen Blin, I know you could use 8 oz gloves back in the 60's and 70's but I dont really think they looked that small and the gloves Tyson was using in the late 80's were definitely alot bulkier in shape than the gloves now, at least Everlast and most of the main brands. The gloves today are more square.MMA is where it is because people want to see Knockouts, not sparring (like in boxing).
The gloves that Oscar and Floyd were wearing could not have been 8oz gloves as they used to. Vegas are responsible for increasing the glove size. Funny since Vegas allow MMA to wear those tiny little gloves.
Anybody know what size gloves Dempsey, Jack Johnson, Louis, Robinson, Pep, etc. were wearing?
Glove Size per era, per weight class, anybody know?
I do remember seeing fights with Marciano and even Foreman wearing 8oz gloves.
Even one match with Ali when he fought some German person (or I think he was German), the gloves he was wearing looked small, almost reminded me of bag gloves.
Tyson even had at least one fight with 8oz gloves.
I am tired of the big sparring gloves being worn: Too many people can just sit there and block ala Winky Wright.
This is the other problem: gloves should fit like a fist, not like a pillow, wide and puffy.
Boxing should decrease ring size a bit so that you cannot run all over the place. Enough room for someone to get out of the way, but not enough to run a marathon.
I want to see boxing step its game up to compete with MMA.
The downside to MMA, in my opinion, is the boring ground attacks/grappling. Not many seem to have the skill set in their hand attacks as elite boxers, although I admit it is harder for them to "master" when they have to be well rounded in everything.
I am not saying Heavyweights should wear 4oz gloves, but 8oz gloves would be nice, with lower weight divisions wearing 5-7 (which I am not even sure they make odd number oz gloves, but somebody should consider it if they could).
"Reyes" glovs should only be worn or at least make sure all the gloves fit a standard of measurement with how thick/puffy they are. Kind of like how Hockey measures the Goalie's leg pads.Comment

i love boxing just the way it is....and if the fights are boring is because of the fighters, not the gloves or ring size. just watch this year mormeck - bell, or barrera - marquez and there you can see a couple of great fights.Comment

well said. boxing is boxing. a fight doesn't need someone getting knocked out for it to be entertaining.
as mma gets more popular and there are more events being stages i'm afraid that theres bound to be an mma related death sooner or later. pinning someone to the floor whilst punching them in the head repeatedly is bound to do some damage, and with longer rounds theres probably more chance of a blood clot developing....just a guess...i'm not a medical expert or anythin.Comment

actually i heard mma is more safer form a commentator of mma. he said its because the ref lets multiple punches in, n ur brain just goes blank while there on the floor n then stop it if they see the guy cant handle it. while boxing, if u drop from a big hit, u have 10sec to recover. at that time ur head is recoverin and another blow straight after ***s ur brain more.
basically wif mma, once ur ***ed the fight is finished. with boxing, u can b ***ed alot time n recover, which in the long run ***s u up harder.Comment

The idea of having a different size ring for lighter weight divisions than heavy divisions is unworkable. How many boxing shows have you seen in which there is only fights from one weight division?? In essence, you would have to have many rings, or have a ring which you can make smaller?? (i've never seen one myself.)
As for the smaller gloves to appease a need for more knockouts, i think boxing is fine as it is. There is more to boxing than watching people being beaten unconsciencious - you strike me as the kind of person who thought DLH vs Mayweather was boring and would not be able to appreciate the extreme amount boxing skill being presented.
Besides - the gloves are not bigger to protect the opposing fighters brain - the gloves are getting bigger to protect the fighters hands!!
The need to protect MMA fighters hands are not as needed as much, as punches are far less prevalent and they do need to grapple.
