When current WBO super featherweight champion Joan Guzman (27-0, 17 KOs) moves up to challenge WBO lightweight champion Mike Katsidis (22-0, 20 KOs) for his title on May 26th, he will have a new but well known face in his corner. ********* broke the news April 16th that Floyd Mayweather Sr. is the new head trainer for Guzman. Mayweather Sr. has trained several high profile fighters including boxing's two biggest names in Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Oscar De La Hoya, who ironically will be fighting each other in boxing's most anticipated fight of the year May 5th.
The always confident and well dressed Mayweather Sr. took time out from his busy schedule to speak with ********* about his newest client. Mayweather spoke on what he can add to Guzman's style, how Guzman will win his third title in three different divisions May 27th, and where he rates Guzman to boxing's pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr.
What's your thoughts on Guzman so far ?
Were just starting to work together but I could tell right away that he's got unbelievable talent.
What adjustments are you going to have Guzman make?
Honestly he doesn't need a lot of changes . He has already won two world championships in two different weight divisions. There are a few adjustments offensively and defensively that I'll add, and those things will produce immediate positive results.
What do you think of his upcoming opponent?
I saw Katsidis's last fight against Graham Earl and he showed good power in dropping Earl but he was also dropped. He seems to be a tough fighter but Guzman is a more complete fighter and will beat him decisively.
You trained both Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Oscar De La Hoya. Both of whom are the top pound for pound fighters in the world. How much pressure is it for a fighter like Guzman to be trained by you knowing the high profile list of fighters you have trained ?
I'm sure there is some pressure there but I made it known to Guzman from the beginning that I believe in him and that I'm here to help add to the superb talent that he already has. I guarantee you that all the hard work that he and I will put in before this fight and the new things that I will teach him will lead to his best performance to date.
You guided Floyd Mayweather Jr's boxing career from a child to a world champion as a man. He is perceived as boxing best pound for pound fighter. Where would you rate Guzman?
With Floyd Jr. being number one Joan can be no less than number two with me now training him. He already possessed outstanding skills before me, so at worst he is boxing's number two pound-for-pound fighter. On HBO May 27th all the world will see that this is true and Guzman will win his third world title in three different divisions.
