Calzaghe Ties Hopkins, Breaks Manfredo in 3

By Sammy Rozenberg - History was made at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Wales on Saturday night. Joe Calzaghe (43-0, 32 KOs) successfully defended his WBO super middleweight title against reality star Peter Manfredo, Jr, (26-4, 12 KOs) and in the process he tied Bernard Hopkins' record of 20 successful title defense.

Manfredo, who gained fame from his appearance on the reality program "The Contender," was overwhelmed by a fighter on another level. Calzaghe used his quick hands to hit Manfedo to the body, and then come upstairs with a solid right hand.

In the third round, Calzaghe unleashed a barrage of punches on Manfredo as he was stuck against the ropes. Manfredo tried to block the punches, but he did not fire back, which prompted referee Terry O'Connor to jump in and stop the action. Although the stoppage was seen as a bit premature, Calzaghe well was on his way to winning the fight by knockout. [details]

Calzaghe looked good, but the stoppage was way too early, Manfredo had enough to get out of there. however, I think he still would've been stopped later in the fight.

For some reason that stoppage reminded me of Mayweather-Manfredi

Kessler has turned down a July fight with Calzaghe. This was stated by Warren post fight. So much for Kessler wanting some of Calzaghe eh.

He also stated they're making a big offer to Taylor to fight Calzaghe in July. Presumably in the US.

No they offered Kessler the fight in July but it was too soon for him so theyre gonna get it on in the not so distant future. Warren has also made an offer for Taylor.

He's been calling Calzaghe out for months. He then gets offered the fight but says that 3 whole months isn't enough time to prepare (although it seems to be for Calzaghe). Well, Mikkel, you have a choice here.

I dunno, Manfredy took some huge shots to the head from Mayweather. Manfredo's took nowhere near as much punishment. Maybe it just 'cos their names sound similar...
