Hopkins: "You Want Me Calzaghe, Come to America"

During a recent interview with the Philadelphia Daily News, Bernard Hopkins spoke about a possible fight with WBO super middleweight champ Joe Calzaghe. Calzaghe has called Hopkins out on a number of occassions, which only made the former middleweight champion angry. Hopkins is not going to return the favor by calling Calzaghe out in the media. He feels that it would only gives Calzaghe more press. If a fight were to take place, it won't be in England. Hopkins demands that Calzaghe travel to America if he really wants the fight. [details]

I think Joe should defend his title to beat the record to defences and then travel to america and kick some butt. If he can that is!

obviously he would go to america for the fight,i doubt he would want to fight hopkins in the uk,all hes been talking about for the last year or so is that he wants to fight in usa

If I was Frank Warren immediately after Joe beats Manfredo I would have him pack his bags and post up in some condo in New York.

I would have him start training and inviting the media to his workouts showing the US and Hopkins that he is posted up in the states for one reason....to fight Hopkins.

It is going to take a little creativity (along with a lot of money) to get Bernard Hopkins in the ring with Joe, Team Calzaghe needs this fight and needs to do everything possible to put all the balls in BHops court.

1) Come to the states Joe
2) start training
3)get every boxing media outlet around to start covering what you have to say.
4)bend over and let Nard get the lions share of the loot
5)you owe many fans such as myself who love you and have always shaken their heads at your big fight talk only to see most of the marquee fights never materialize.

although i never agreed with the manfredo fight in the first place,it would be much more understandable if the fight was in america,cause when he was asked why he was fighting manfredo he said something like,well hes well known in america he was on the contender etc.

so he should have fought him in america

I agree with everything you wrote. He does all that and somehow beats or even loses a close fight, he will probably gain the respect and/or admiration of the US fans.

I agree, Joe should have fought Manfredo is Las Vegas...providing he would win that fight he could proclaim in the post fight interview that he is on American soil for one reason, to fight Bhop-he could make his case right then and there to the boxing world and then it would be up to Bernard to say no thanks.

Personally I dont believe Hopkins will ever step into the ring with Joe, Joe throws to many punches, far too active, is a southpaw, has some of the fastest hands in the sport, constantly throws combinations with puches that are never thrown from the same angle or the same speed....just a damn tough fight for the old lion who has grown quite comfortable with throwing 16 punches a round.

I agree with everything in your post except #3 - I wouldn't expect ANY fighter to come here from overseas if the payoff wasn't worth it. I can see if it took for Joe to fight for scale in order to get Bernard to fight over there (similar to what it took to make Tszyu-Hatton a reality), but if Joe's coming to the states, it has to make sense and more cents.

Bernard can make his coin from the promotion since he's a GBP stakeholder. Whoever wants homefield advantage will have to sacrafice in the pocket. If neither is willing to do that, then one should stop mentioning the other and let it be done with. This fight has been discussed since 2002, more than enough time to work out the details already.

Hopkins mentioned Calzaghe's name in the press when he claimed that he would stop Calzaghe beating his defences record. If it were Calzaghe saying the kind of things Hopkins is saying in this interview, people would claim that Calzaghe is ducking him.

I agree with Calzaghe going to America and I think he will. I dont agree about him sacrificing the purse. Calzaghe hasnt got many fights left and is due a few big paydays. He'll not have earned anything NEAR in his whole career what Hopkins made in a handful of high-profile fights.
