Shocks the world? I didn't even know this fight was going on...Who the hell is Maske? When was Virgil Hill nowadays regarded as anything big? Am I missing something?

Yeah thats what I thought. I knew they were fighting and they were both in their forties. I don't know if its one of the biggest upsets in years. Sure there has been better.Comment

If you don't know who Maske is, you need to read up more on boxing history. Maske won the gold medal in 88, turned pro not long after and was dominating the light heavywieght division. He was a huge star in Germany and then he and Hill, also a former Olympic medal winner, fought a unification bout which he was a heavy favorite and lost a split decision. Like Naseem Hamed, he just left the sport. They say that he's the sole reason why boxing is so big in that country. Hill is way past his best days, but at one point he was regarded as an elite light heavyweight. Now he's a reigning cruiserweight champ and most fighters, even in Germany, thought Maske had NO chance. To come back after ten years and beat Hill, who is now bigger, even at 43, is insane. Look at Morrison, he's been gone for ten years and he was getting busted up in the first and then breathing like he was dying in the second round of his return fight. Morrison cant even go 4 rounds, and Maske just went a hard twelve. How many active fighters can even go twelve rounds these days?Last edited by BIGPOPPAPUMP; 04-01-2007, 02:03 AM.Comment

Well yeah, the only really astonishing fact is that he came back after a 10 year layoff and won in his 40s. Though still, how does this effect much in the grand scheme of things to call it an Upset of the Year?
Oh and btw. I'm not gonna argue that I should have known who these people were. I was born in 1985. I'm sorry if I missed out on these 2 cats who seem to be nobodies nowadays and out of the news. I just know Virgil Hill from be KOed by Jones.Comment

I can believe Maske shocking Germany, where he is an adored celebrity. People always wondered why he didn't come to America, and the answer is because it didn't make any sense financially. His technical style wouldn't sell in America. In Germany, he was a national hero of sorts for winning the Gold Medal and would flock to his fights.
Roy Jones said that he respected Maske as a champion.
But as great as Virgil Hill has been, he hasn't been world class for a very long time. How he could be recognized as a champion now is beyond me, given his two losses to Mormeck, one of them by stoppage?
Maske does get the distinction of having avenged his only pro loss and win a belt, then go out on top? I can see this being big in Germany.Comment

Yeah he's probably the third biggest name in the history of boxing in Germany (behind Schmeling and Rocky (Rocchigiani)).Comment

I still think it's a hell of an achievement and story, even on a Worldwide level. To come back after 10 years out and win a fight like that as your first comeback fight, really takes some beating. I think the word shock and amazing etc can be overused a lot, but I really do think this is pretty inspirational stuff.Last edited by paul750; 04-01-2007, 07:43 PM.Comment

Its amazing considering Morrison was exhausted for over 20 minutes after 2 rounds of fighting.
Conditioning wise its incredible that Maske was able to do that, especially against a guy like Hill who's always jumping around everywhere.
And that last sentence is rediculous. There are plenty of guys that can go a hard 15 rounds, and hundreds and hundreds of guys that can go 12. As many as there have ever been.
I hate it when people downplay the toughness of the elite fighters these days, just because there are more boxers that are less likely to brawl. Just cause they dont brawl doenst mean they arent tough enough to go a full 12 rounds.
Mayweather, Pacman, Hatton, Arce.... These guys could go 15 rounds easy.Comment
