IMO it it purely for marketing reasons.

One thing is for sure is whoever is doing the talkin better back it up with their fists. Iv no problem with it when a fighter actually does what he says he is going to do.

Audley for example said he was goin to be world champ. Now he looks rather silly.

I LOVE boxers who talk ****! I don't want a quiet humble ass boxer. If the **** talker loses and still talks **** thats even better. To me it shows confidence and desire to be the best, even if he's not.

Are we just a different generation, or is there a different standard when we choose to accept a mouthy fighter based on who's doing the talking?

Ali seemed appreciated for it very early in his career.

We have all seen footage of him screaming "I'm the King of the World!" while standing right next to guys like Ray Robinson and Joe Louis.
He was a kid at the time..

That seems offensive to me even knowing Ali's story and how it ended.. He laid claim, eventually.

Still, Ali was loved for it at the time.

(please, not so much with the answers telling me it was "how he did it..")

People seem to hate Mayweather for talk..

Talk in general seems to upset people.

          What gives?
I dont mind talk.. When it's just a fighter building himself up.. Fighters need to be confident and a little Psychological warfare is part of the game..
Its also acceptable if it's FUNNY and that is key.. Funny does NOT mean RUDE or disrespectful..BUt Funny.. Think Ali.. Rude.. Think Toney.. Disrespectful.. Think Floyd Mayweather..

By disrespectful I mean Putting down the guys you are fighting.. This just makes you look bad when you beat them.. because you have been calling them ****.. It belittles your OWN win.. Better to give the guy some respect ..Then when you win You beat a top a fighter .. not some BUM..

The public knows who the best is. If a fighter needs to yell "I'm fighting the best!", Chances are that he's a bit of a bluffer.

I picked that I love it when they talk **** and for the most part I do.I like it when Roy Jones, Bernard Hopkins, and Floyd Mayweather talk trash and then for the most part back it up.I don't like James Toney trash talk as most times his fat ass couldn't back it up and Antonio Tarver he almost never backed up his promise of violence.

Solely depends on who's doing the talking.

If it's Miranda saying truthful things about Taylor and Dibella I encourage it. But if it's Floyd Mayweather Jr talking about how much money he makes and how good of a fighter he is compared to everyone else.....that's where I draw the line.

sometimes the trash talk can really add to the fight. my favorite trash talk story ever was in 95 or 96 i think, and it involved chris byrd. byrd was gonna fight this guy tim puller on tv, and before the fight puller went on tv saying byrd was nothing and he held up a stuffed tweety bird and said " this is chris byrd " and then punched it. well, he was right about one thing, the fight did end in a TKO stoppage, of byrd teeing off on puller's face until the ref had enough. i was laughing my ass off after that
