Warren: If Calzaghe Beats Manfredo, Then Kessler Is Next

30.03.07 - Boxing promoter Frank Warren today told talkSPORT, the UK’s only national commercial speech radio station, that WBO champion Joe Calzaghe has his sights set on a title unification bout with WBC and WBA super middleweight Mikkel Kessler following the Dane’s defeat last weekend of Mexican Librado Andrade after a unanimous points decision where he retained his crowns.

Speaking on the Breakfast Show to Alvin Martin and Graham Beecroft ahead of Calzaghe’s fight with Peter Manfredo Jnr on 7th April at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Warren said: “With Joe, you never know what’s going to happen with him. He’s a really good fighter. He’s the best fighter I’ve ever been involved with in my time in boxing. I think he’ll win the fight [against Manfredo]. But I think it will be a really tough, competitive fight. If he comes through that then we’re looking to do a unification with [Mikkel] Kessler..

On the up-coming Calzaghe Manfredo bout, Warren said: “Joe is going for his record 20th defence. That will put him up there with Larry Holmes and Bernard Hopkins. He’s looking to put on a show for the Welsh public.

“The fighter he’s got, Peter Manfredo, is very brave, comes forward. He’s had Sugar Ray Leonard working and advising him. He fancies the job.

“I think its 20 years and one day on April 7th when Sugar Ray Leonard himself caused a huge upset by beating Marvin Hagler. Ring Magazine described it as the upset of the year. They fancy that might be an omen for them. But Manfredo will come to fight. He’s a tough little guy.”

This fight can happen, as long as Kessler comes to the UK to fight.

After Kessler beat Beyer, he said that he would come to England to fight. He should stick to his word.

OF course it HAS to take place in England. And it will. But if Joe can get a fight with Taylor he should take it.

I said Joe would box Kessler, but he said either in the uk or neutral ground.

Which is fair enough.... he is the champ, he is the draw... Kessler needs to come to him effectively.

Weird how opinions go around and around in here. If Calzaghe fights in the UK its okay now? As long as he fights Kessler?

I hope this will silence the conspiracy theorists saying he was ducking Kessler. Shocking how many were saying such stuff with no evidence to back it up apart from the fact that the fight hasnt taken place......YET! Yes, Warren saying this doesnt mean it will happen, but it shows that the man is NOT ducking Kessler!

I would love to see Kessler v Joe. I just really hope Kessler beats some great opponenets before he gets to Joe. This way Joe will get credit for boxing and beating Kessler.
