He FOUGHT for 15 rounds with a prime Duran (even if he was at welter)
He stopped a prime undeafeted Hearns.
He came out of retirement to beat arguably the greatest middleweight ever.

As you can see by the name i was a big fan of Ray Leonard growing up. I just wanted to read what your opinions are of him as a fighter. How good do you think he really was? In my opinion i thought his prime was 1978 thru 1982. I don't think the 1987 thru 1991 version of Leonard is even in the same ballpark as the one in his prime. He lost 5 years from 82 to 87 due to the detached retina. Had he not lost those 5 years,how do you think his career would have turned out? Here are some opponents he would have likely faced

Aaron pryor
Marvin Hagler - But in 1982/83 In Hagler's prime
Donald Curry - Around 1984
Lloyd Honeyghan - Around 1985
Mike McCallum - At 154 pounds 1986

Ray did have Tommy almost knocked out in the 6th round of that 1st fight. He could have put him away much earlier then that 14th round. He let him off the hook.

It is an easy equation. Marvin was supposedly the greatest middleweight of all time, and SRL the welterweight beat him. It doesnt take a maths genius to come up with the conclusion that SRL is a true great. Deterioated a bit fast.....but still great.
Just exactly how great we can debate untill the cows come home. Is he as good as the original SRR, ALi, etc ? Some would say yes but not SRL and myself but the fact that it would be debated....
