    A Question

    for example: i've been training for 5 years and hitting the punching bag, but the question is. in those 5 years when i've been hitting the punching heavy bag and i kept adding more sand to the bag and continue punching through those 5 years. and this year i decide to become a boxer, do you think i would have the power to K.O boxers QUICK from hitting the heavy bag for 5 years?

    That's a very relative, subjective question in my eyes. How is your form? If you haven't had a trainer, or anyone correcting your flaws, do you punch well? I mean, do you feel that you follow through with your punches, distribute your weight, etc? Also, KO power is said by many trainers to be natural- not made. If you're not a big puncher you can hit the heavy bag for a lifetime and never become one. The heavy bag can't get KOed...so I guess you just don't know.

    I think your KO power will have more to do with your natural power and form than you hitting a bag for five years. Why have you trained for so god awfully long without fighting?

      This is my opinion... The heavy bag strengthens your punching power but I reckon the real power comes from your shoulders. If you have been punching that bag for 5 years yes you'll be able too KO someone. Too strengthen your fist even more try some weights and alot of push ups

        i put it as an example. my friend has been training for 5 years without a trainer or anything, from what other people said to him, they told him that to KO a boxer is by hitting the heavy bag. that's why i asked you guys. but thanks for your answer.


        P.S - i can't punch for ****, if i get into boxing my first amateur fight i would get wrecked. lol

          I can only state my opinion. While the heavy bag may improve your power, I don't think you become the 'one punch KO artist' you seemed to refer to in your initial post, by punching a heavy bag for 5 years. It has to do with form, ability- and how hard your friend punches naturally. If he has a solid punch, sure it can improve into a formidable one but the heavy bag can't take a light hitter and turn them into a Tyson.

          I would also say age matters. 5 years of hitting the bag from 10-15? Or from 20-25? Huge difference.

            he started at 15. and he's now 20

              Training of any sort young enough improves your ability but I wouldn't automatically expect KO power from heavy bag training. Improvement does not mean one punch power. Depends on where he started in terms of his power.

                it takes a hell of a lot more than simply hitting a heavybag for years to knockout a boxer. of course hitting a heavybag can develop more strength in your punches but you need timing and leverage in your punches to knock another guy out unless your fighting a glass joe with no ability

                  Knockouts are not necessarily about power, they have more to do with timing and distance and you can only learn that in the ring.

                    Yeah, as Squeal said, it's not so much about power as it is technique. You should join up at a gym. There are a few good ones here in Miami. I used to train at KnockOut Boxing Gym, and am rejoining next week. It's run by Jorge Ortiz a local referee and had a few current and former fighters who trained and coached there. But it's in the Hammocks section of Kendall which might be a bit too far from you. There's Fight Club which has a lot of pro fighters there too, Glen Johnson is one, I think. South Florida Boxing club is another. But there are more aside from these. I can only speak for Knock Out, and I highly recommend it. The training staff there is awesome and helps everyone out. There are plenty of heavybags, speedbags, treadmills, a couple of rings, full weight room and the cost is affrodable ($45/month for 6 months or $35/month for 12 months).

                    If you been hitting the bag regularly for 5 years, then you should be in decent shape to get ready for all the rest of the stuff that you need to learn. And there is alot more to it than just the bag. You'll love it!
