    Smoke Gainer convo with me

Well I was in Pensacola for Spring Break and talked to Smoke while in the Gym. He asked me if I was going pro and at what weight. I said maybe I will go pro later, after 3-4 more years as an amatuer (I'm 20 right now). I then told him I would like to fight at 140. LOL...he pretty much wrote that off as absurd. I can't believe what he did to make weight. He's as big as me if not bigger and fights at 130 and fought majorily around 126. People really make low weights to get an advantage and he was assuring me that I will feel the opponent's power at 140. He was describing how he had KOd guys successfully with vicious shots that only stunned Corrales at best because Diego came down from so high to make weight.

Blah. I don't want to have to fight at less than 135. Maybe I will feel the thunder there but I may just choose to deal with it.

Hey Lightweight next time your chillin with your boy smoke tell him that I was awe inspired by his warrior like performance against Juan Manuel Marquez, tell him I had 5 people over that night that refuse to watch boxing now because of his masterful showing.

Could you do me a favor and tell him that?

      Thanks buddy!

Cutting weight depends on whether you're scared of keepin your own power, or feeling your opponents! Who knows? Youu might go to 135 and think that the weight difference will help, but the draining might get you Ko'd....

Well 135 would be reasonable, but from his talks it seems like 130 or lower would be better. I just don't want to deal with that though.

          Scap...no. (^_^)

Smoke killed himself to make weight later in his career. But he doesn't cut weight just for sparring, and since I spar with him now and then it does not seem wise to say that type of thing.

LOL at what scap said....he is right tho.Gainer was overhyped and all but whatever. How tall are you SLW?That would be a factor in deciding what weight to fight at for me.......I am like 5'11 and think if I was in prime shape and a fighter I could make 140 all day.

Smoke was not really overhyped. It's not like people said he was Ali at 126 or anything. He just had his worst showing vs Marquez. He still put John on his ass in round even having to try 3 times to make 126 in Indonesia. This guy who Marquez lost to by the way. Smoke also went 1-1 in fight with Kevin Kelley, and beat Daniel Seda and Orlando Soto. I don't know why he looked like he did vs Marquez but that does not fully reflect his career.

I'm 5'8' 1/2'' and I am 150 right now, and I'm in pretty good shape.

Looking back now that you have mentioned it....Smoke did have his moments did'nt he.He still has like 8 loses tho I think.Anyway I see you pic you look pretty ****ing solid.......and you look like you could make 135 if you wanted to but why go lower if you are not comfortable with it.

Yeah I could probably make 135 ok in the pros. Not gonna try it in the ams though. My last 4 fights in the ams I fought at 152, 149, 146, and 146. This was without using a sauna or anything. In the pros with a full day to recover I guess 135 is fine.

Your right that fight certainly doesnt reflect his career(it was damn gross though), dont forget his solid showing against World Champ Freddie Norwood.
