Is clinching totally illegal?

ahahahaha.....I also think it's definitely part of strategy up to a certain point. When your doing it excessively, warnings should be made and then point deductions. I wouldn't call it illegal though because it's always gonna happen and it's natural sometimes. It's a strategy to be used if your hurt, getting in close to do hit and holds(aka Hugging, aka Hatton), and some use it to sap others energy. It works no doubt and can be annoying though shouldn't be ruled out of the sport. Warnings should def be given beforehand if the ref decides to be a **** about it.
well, IMO clinching should be legal, cos as already said, its part of a strategy. but there should be less toleration when there is excessive clinching. in that way we wouldnt have to see again a fight like hatton - urango again =P. the final rounds of that fight were a shame. there were more clinches than jabs xD
forgot to say that the excessive clinching is not the fighters fault, cos if the referee says nothing, of course they will continue doing it.Last edited by Ramamaiden; 03-02-2007, 11:45 PM.Comment

Part of the problem is that the ref who enforces it likely never works a big fight again if that fight features a clincher. Can you imagine the outrage and outcome if a ref deducted points from Hopkins, Floyd, Ward or Klitschko and it was the difference of a win/loss for them? That ref would be working small venues on the outskirts of Nowhereville for the rest of his career.Comment
