    Is clinching totally illegal?

I could do research, but i cant be arsed.
    What do u think?

Ali clinching with Frazier..should he of been penalised for that?
Should there be zero tollerance on any clinching at all?

I just wonder what it says in the offical rules.

It is illegal sort of, but it is tolerated in professional boxing. Amateur bgoxing is a different kettle of wossnames.

I also think it's definitely part of strategy up to a certain point. When your doing it excessively, warnings should be made and then point deductions. I wouldn't call it illegal though because it's always gonna happen and it's natural sometimes. It's a strategy to be used if your hurt, getting in close to do hit and holds(aka Hugging, aka Hatton), and some use it to sap others energy. It works no doubt and can be annoying though shouldn't be ruled out of the sport. Warnings should def be given beforehand if the ref decides to be a **** about it.

              Marquess of Queensberry rules
              1. To be a fair stand-up boxing match in a 24-foot ring, or as near that size as practicable
              2. No wrestling or hugging allowed
              3. The rounds to be of three minutes' duration, and one minute's time between rounds
              4. If either man falls through weakness or otherwise, he must get up unassisted, 10 seconds to be allowed him to do so, the other man meanwhile to return to his corner, and when the fallen man is on his legs the round is to be resumed and continued until the three minutes have expired. If one man fails to come to the scratch in the 10 seconds allowed, it shall be in the power of the referee to give his award in favour of the other man
              5. A man hanging on the ropes in a helpless state, with his toes off the ground, shall be considered down
              6. No seconds or any other person to be allowed in the ring during the rounds
              7. Should the contest be stopped by any unavoidable interference, the referee to name the time and place as soon as possible for finishing the contest; so that the match must be won and lost, unless the backers of both men agree to draw the stakes
              8. The gloves to be fair-sized boxing gloves of the best quality and new.
              9. Should a glove burst, or come off, it must be replaced to the referee's satisfaction
              10. A man on one knee is considered down and if struck is entitled to the stakes
              11. No shoes or boots with springs allowed
              12. The contest in all other respects to be governed by revised rules of the London Prize Ring

                Thanks Ninja Man.
So it is illegal. But it is permissable in a unspoken rule kinda way.

Why not treat it the same as low blows?
If u clinch u get warned. If u get warned 3 times u get a point deducted.
Actually, thats ****in ******. Alot of the time both fighters clinch.

Its just that there are fighters who will stand toe to toe and not clinch. They cover up and slip shots. Why are some fighters allowed to clinch as a tactic.
                Hmmm.

Bobby, if you have a problem with John Ruiz, quit beating around the bush - just come out and say it! (smilie)

Well......its part of the game....Using your strength and moving your opponent around, putting presure...

It just needs to be well regulated.
