I see what you're saying now. It's funny a lot of people use that same argument against MMA on this board.

Obviously the person who said this isn't a fan though. Basically they're dismissing it because they don't like it, sounds like.

A sport is any endeavour in which two or more competitors or teams are pitted against one another in a test of physical and mental skill and ability. Boxing is among the purest of sports.

the dictionary defines sport as an active passtime or activity. if these dont fit the bill then you need to change the definition not the activity

You must physically and mentally train yourself.

well to be fair, u need to train physically and mentally train for
Poker,Bowling, dancing and golf, anything thats considered a sport you hav to train physically and mentally, if we dont find it a sport then that is COOL with me, but you hav to be in amazin physical shape to be a dancer because my sister used to dance when she was younger and the training and the body she got was out this world, poker is a mental game, so is chess, i wouldnt call them sports tho, because i am a big closed minded **** and i belive only boxing and MMA are sports lol

i have played poker proffesionaly and to win the world series it takes 10 days of playing 12 hours a day. this may not compare to the boston marathon, but it certainly requires a level of physical preparation.

                  I categorize 'sports' as such.
                  1. You score points.
                  2. You must physically and mentally train yourself.
                  3. There is a chance of physical harm.
Right now the media has ran out of new ideas and has been passing everything in sight off as a sport .
                  1. Spelling bee
                  2. Poker
                  3. Bowling
                  4. dancing
                  5. cooking
                  6. Golf
All of these can be seen on Espam on any given day but I do not feel that any of them are sports . They are games and or skills but not sports .
What do you define a sport as ?

Honestly, a sport is not defined by what you do. A sport can be anything- from frog licking to boxing. All a sport is a competition, governed by rules, in which people attempt to best the other and win. Anything you make into a competitive outing is a "sport".

Okay guys all great points and I may have to change my mind on some of these things. The main point of this was too find a way to explain to someone that boxing is more then just hitting someone. As you can see if someone turns this around and on to a sport they like then it becomes a problem. Yet they fing a ton of way too discredit boxing.

Bingo! You nailed it. It's basically a game people play by the rules. With the emphasis on Rules which govern any sport.

Take out the rules, and it's not a sport anymore. It becomes a game of chaos or playing with abandon, like a bunch of crazy ass kids going wild.
