this is a misguided statement....
robinson is well known to have been one of the greatest charitable sports figures of his times.... he donated thousands if not millions of dollars to fight many different diseases and various causes...
he was not an arrogant ass as you put it, he may have been ****y but he was certainly friendly and approachable.... he was a central figure in the harlem community during his fight career... he walked the streets, spoke face to face to the common citizen and contributed greatly to a renaissance within his community
most of the bad things people say about him are a result of things he did after he left the ring...
robinson suffered from many debilitating diseases as a result of his prolonged career than cause him great pain and mental anguish, which he took out on others later in life... ie.... beating his girlfriends etc.... he suffered from alzheimers and diabetes amongst many others that often left him angry and violent without provocation... he was destitute and broken
he is also widely regarded as arrogant because he negotiated his own contracts at the time and was the first fighter to demand TV money from all his fights.... promotors hated him cause he wanted what he deserved and labeled him arrogant cause he wasnt willing to be taken advantage of... he also refused to give in the mob, which was very rare for a NY fighter of his day.... Lamotta certainly did.... and the mob labeled him as "arrogant" cause he wouldnt play along....
i think it also bears mentioning that robinson was loved and respected worldwide.... when he went to europe people flocked to the station in droves just to catch a glimpse of the champ... the french especially loved him chanting "le Sucre!!!" whenever he came around....
floyd will never garner that kind of true admiration from the common man, and robinson would not have done so himself had he acted in the manner that mayweather does now.
