The hype surrounding McClellan was unbelievable, he was being described by the British media as the 'most dangerous man on the planet' and 'next big thing' and 'human pitbull'. The consensus was that if Benn could somehow bring back the old Dark Destroyer from his fighting days (you know, the most vicious bastard ever caught on film), then we're in for a frightening collision. But the consensus was that Benn was shot to pieces, his head elsewhere due to personal problems, and only needed one G-Man right hand on that dodgy jaw to end his career... that was until strange things started happening in the week or so before the fight, like Benn no-showing, only showing with a wooly hat on (with 'No Fear' logo on), acting strangely, talking strangely, and his eyes looking as if he's off on his head on *******. Then people started wondering whether the DARK Destroyer was back, in a dark place.
That week or so before the fight, with Benn acting so strangely and McClellan promising a first-round KO, was extremely exciting. Then they started showing clips of Benn at his frightening best on his KO streak in the 80's, reminding us of that animal who did so much to ignite the domestic game in the mid and late 80's (boost of the ITV era), and the odds for McClellan at the bookies dropped! Then Jim Rosenthal asked him a few days before the fight for his tactics and Benn said "I'm going to be in his face right from the opening bell, trying to knock his block off - mate!", Rosenthal then said "But don't you think you should be a little more careful and keep your chin tucked down because this fellow is supposed to be the pound-for-pound hardest puncher in the game?", and Nige said "I've had more knockouts than he's had fights! I'm not going to lose no sleep over it."
ITV ambitiously estimated up to a 10 million audience - they were wrong.
17 million saw it.Last edited by Miagi; 02-21-2007, 10:03 PM.Comment

This is one of those stories that makes me want to stop watching boxing. It makes boxing a guilty pleasure. I know the fighters know the risks, but they get into it young, and it's all the know, so how else are they going to look after their families? You could say they have a choice, but there's so much money on the table, and the risks of quitting are also quite high. And I'm just a spectator that dangles the money in front of them, and gets the entertainment with none of the risk. It doesn't really seem right.Comment
