Greatest Middleweight - Hagler or Monzon ?

jose napoles, emile griffith and nino benvenuti are nobodies?
Although i do admit that hearns is better than napoles and griffith. Napoles was dominant in a weaker era, he didnt have a robinson, hearns, leonard or benitez to see how good he really is.Comment

Thats why he is at #2 for meComment

Monzon is one middleweight boxer i dont know much about but i constantly hear him being touted as the greatest ever middleweight. I will go for Monzon on the basis that Hagler lost to SRL even though it was controversial as hell. A bad reason you could say, and i wouldnt disagree.
Even though these 2 guys are considered the best middleweights because they campaigned at middleweight all there career, i think there are many boxers who could have beaten them at middlweight. Yes, for instance if SRR fought Hagler or Monzon at middleweight, or if certain boxers step down to the weight.Comment

If they gave hagler the decision or at least a draw against leonard, he would get more respect for sure. The guy was robbed, he easily took 6 rounds at least.Comment

Perhaps..but SRR is universally the greatest boxer ever. He started out as a welterweight, the same as SRL. I would have to say SRR in a one off match, would have Haglers number. Duran, who was a lightweight gave Hagler a tough contest as well, so i really believe SRR would have taken Hagler. It wouldnt be easy, but SRR had the skill neccessary and the know how to grind out a decision. SRR could have beaten any middleweight boxer ever, in the same way that Roy Jones could.Last edited by hugh grant; 02-21-2007, 03:33 PM.Comment

Hagler is easily my favorite boxer of all time, but that's at least partially because he fought when I was an impressionable teenybopper ;^>. And I've had the great honor to meet him in person and he is as classy as one could hope.
(And to this day, the bile rises when I think of the shameful theft he was unjustly forced to swallow against SRL...
)
Monzon was a serious beast as well and many who saw both fight live wouldn't be so quick to give it to Hagler... My dad still cringes at the beatings he put on the very sturdy Benvenuti! But given Hagler's absolutely sterling character versus Monzon's umm "vagaries", I have to put my vote on the Marvelous one. They were both all time greats who, for me at least, make relatively untested guys like PBF pale in comparison...
Likewise, given the long history of boxing and our natural tendency to remember the latest and greatest, I wouldn't be at all surprised if there weren't even greater middleweights than Hagler and Monzon (arguably SRR or others)...Comment
