I wouldn't go quite as far as saying Hatton is the biggest sports star in the UK, (thats never going to be a boxer) but he's very popular with huge swathes of the North and yep, he could sell 60,000 for a fight against a big name, no doubt.

He's the biggest name boxer in the UK since the JuyJuy years....

Very interesting that the biggest names in sport in the UK tend to come from

1) Football (not just Beckham!) Gerrard, Rooney
2) Tennis Henman now Murray
3) Motor Racing - Button
4) Rugby - Wilkinson
5) Cricket - Flintoff

I bet most of the US guys on here will never have heard of any of those people, but then again I couldn't name a single current American football player and only know Barry Bonds for the Balco scandal!

Im from the UK, and id have to say only the footballers are more famous than Hatton really. I wouldnt recognise Button if he walked passed me

Haha, I'm a big fan of Hargreaves and have been since I watched Bayern a couple of times in the champions league 2004/5 I think, but he's always gonna be that unsung hero type of player (although vitally important)

Now we could talk about how black english players have never got the recognition they deserve all night. Sol Campbell is one of England's all time best players, yet gets almost zero respect from the fans. massive bugbear of mine, thought I'd get it off my chest!

In reply to the Hatton-PBF debate, worldwide PBF is definitely a bigger name than Hatton, and an amazing boxer, BUT, I'd have to say that a lot of the attention he's getting is from journos and sports fans who hear he's the dogs b*ll*cks but haven't seen much if any of him in the ring, and aren't likely to be that enamoured with his style. PBF most likely is a bit aware of this (he doesn't come across as ******) which is why he's resorted to awful trash talking to raise his profile.

I can't enforce on you that the answer is Button, but as a proxy for this look at the back pages. Button makes them whenever he's on the podium whereas I think only Hatton-Tyzyu made the Sun's back page.

I agree that he's the closest to Hatton, the others are leagues ahead in fame, and you could probably throw in a few more, possible even Amir Khan!

There are a zillion footballers over here who are more hyped than hatton.

Lampard, Gerrard, Rooney, and the rest of the english national team, a team so 'good' they been to one final in about 100 years of football, lol.

Actually they were making pretty similar money until the DLH fight. Hatton-DLH would've probably generated an equal amount of money if roles were reveresed.

I don't think Hatton could make $8 million to fight Baldomir or Margarito. I don't think he's made that much for any fight...
