Hatton fought Urango with a chest infection!

Ricky Hatton's Las Vegas debut was almost scuppered by a chest infection.

Hatton beat Juan Urango comprehensively on points in the ******** capital last Saturday night to take the IBF light-welterweight crown.

But now his dad Ray has revealed that the Hitman was on the verge of having to pull out after being hit by a chest infection 10 days before the bout.

And he claims this was the reason his son's stamina appeared to be a problem in the later rounds.

He told The Daily Express: "People have said Ricky looked jaded in the second half of the fight and I'm not surprised.

"Ricky suffered a really bad chest infection in the lead-up to the fight while out in Las Vegas.

"The doctor said it would linger for weeks. We carried on, but if the infection had started a few days later, we'd have pulled him out."

Hatton now has time to recuperate before his next appearance - against Jose Luis Castillo in Vegas in June.

That explains why he looked so weak and sloppy then.

Had to think of something for that bull**** hugging. This is the first I heard of this. Hatton's dad must be a member of the board and heard all the negative comments about the fight.

It seems fair enough. It's not like he needed to make excuses having won eleven rounds on all cards.

Collazo was a different situation (not to mention a better fighter). The body shots in the fifth can't have helped, but Hatton still won every round thereafter.

Nah, that performance was because American TV forced him to become a welterweight in just six or seven weeks, so he had to bulk up quickly and lost the usual spring in his step.

It was reported Hatton had come down with a cold a few days before.

Hatton has never looked weak and sloppy like that, and I've been watching him since January '95.

And you could see that from the first round when Hatton seemed unusually flat-footed.

Hatton polarises people, that's something I've realised. You either love him or you hate him and those who hate him do so beyond reason. Rick could have KO'd Urango in four rounds and the posts here would have been "Urango is a nobody, a paper champ, Hatton sucksm he has no defence lolz". If Hatton fights Castillo in a competitive fight and knocks him out sensationally in the ninth round then all the posts on here (and everywhere else in the boxing universe) will be about "Castillo is shot, look at his last fight, Hatton is teh SUX lolz1!!111!".

I mean he doesn't get credit for beating Kostya Tszyu when Tszyu was considered the best at 140 bar none and third pound for pound.

Tszyu was considered #1 lb4lb (according to Bert Sugar, Freddie Roach, KOTV, maxboxing.com).

I'm going off the Ring ratings though, which had Mayweather at #1 and Winky at #2. Somehow over this weekend Hatton has moved down to number nine in the p4p ratings while Joe Calzaghe has leapfrogged him into the number eight spot - despite Rick taking a belt in a 12 round demolition and Joe not fighting! Even so I respect the Ring ratings and Rick will be up there again after he beats Castillo...
