Ali was a ton more controversial than Mayweather. The whole buisiness with the Vietnam War made him more than just a boxer, but almost a representation of those against the War...Im fairly sure the public portrayed Frazier as a supporter of the War, not with his consent either...

Ali had been in wars...the Frazier fights amazed people. Mayweather isnt boring or anything, at kleast to me, but hasnt really had to show heart...the public loves fighters that show heart and has nothing against trading shots. Floyd very seldomly even gets hit cleanly due to his reflexes and defense, so thats out of the picture for him...

Ali was a major underdog in his big fights...fighters get tons of attention if they pull off an upset. Ali did it twice to two major All Time Greats...Liston and Foreman. Whens the last time Floyd has ever been unexpected to win, let alone a major underdog?

And last of all Ali had longevity...Floyd won his first title about 8 years ago, and is still challenging for titles. Ali got his first title, and was still in title fights 16 years later...people really went through their childhood hearing his name as a champ or contendor...being a heavyweight and incredibly fast for one didnt hurt either...

Its not Mayweathers fault or anything, and I think hes going to get more credit when people look back on his career, but its just kind of hard to eccplise the effects Ali had on the public, not just the boxing world
