Why are FOTY's between lesser fighters nowadays?

Like Gatti-Ward, and the one this year between those two nobodies.

If you look back in history, your RARELY see a FOTY thats not between some of boxings greatest starts.

Is that because fights back then were hyped up a lot, and the fights actually lived up to the hype? Maybe the fighters, because they got paid a lot less, felt it neccesary to put on a show?

is it because the stars fought a lot more frequently back in the day, increasing their chances of a great fight?

Or is it because todays stars arent fighting the best available or the best style matchups? Or are they more fucused on winning the fight rather then impressing?

Or is it simply because we have a lot more, and i mean a LOT more, televised fights nowadays. And for that reason, we occasionaly get treated to an amazing style matchup between two lesser guys?

I think if it's between two less known fighters they are more likely to go hard and make a good impression. Which creates competition and makes for a great fight. I think big fights are more boring sometimes because both fighters are trying to feel each other out so that they don't become vulnerable to a big shot.

I don't really care much of who were the personalities involve, for as along as the fighters does it "guts in, guts out" then I'm good for it.

and to answer youre question,i think it answers its self, the fighters with balls fall, cause they had the balls to fight, the protected fighters with there perfect records will always come victorious, cause they didnt fight anybody

Champions today play it safe more often than not, and usually pick fights with challengers who aren't competitive with them. Sometimes they get knocked out by these challengers with a lucky punch, or from taking them lightly or having a bad night, but in most cases things go according to plan and the champion dominates in boring, predictable fashion.

Because great fighters dont fight each other as much as they used too.
