The good thing about being American is that you can claim or be adopted by another country. Just like Andre Berto...when he didn't pass to be a U.S. olympian, he was adopted by the country of his roots (Haiti?). If Mexico had lacked boxers and Delahoya did not qualify for the Olympics, Mexico would see his talent and adopt him. Too bad Oscar did qualify and Mexico has enormous talents to even consider looking outside.
I personally think it depends what the individual claims to be and how the people of that country accepts it or not. If DelaHoya thinks he is also Mexican then he is. If he raises the Mexican flag then he is.

Felix Trinidad said when he climbed through the ropes after his fight with Dela Hoya, he told julio cesar chavez, who was sitting at ringside that he's the true mexican and not dela hoya, apparently referring to oscar running the last 3 rounds of their fight.

Come On!! Seriously, I'm of Irish blood but that doesn't make me Irish. Oscar won Olympic Gold for the U.S. for cryin' out loud. Just because the blood in his veins is of Mexican origin, it doesn't mean he's not an Americano....he is.

Not trying to piss anyone off; but I really don't understand this kind of question.
          I agree with this.

It's nobody's right to criticize DLH for his "Mexicanness."

He is a Mexican American. I've heard this issue many times being in California.

I think when Edward James Olmos gives that monolouge in "Selena" about how hard it is to be a Mexican American; that summed up the argument.

He said that you can never be American enough for the Americans, and never Mexican enough for the Mexicans.

            Oscar is a person. He's a guy. He's a juggernaut.

            Everybody should respect that.

I know the Mexican people are some of the most nationalist and proud people in the world. Oscar has not abandoned his heritage.

            They leap at that accusation.

Many in Mexico dream of becoming what DLH has created for himself.

Yet he is put down by many of his own people for breaking cultural barriers..

Is this not a mass case of haterism?

Maybe someone should explain to me what "being Mexican" means?

Oscar is one of the brightest shining stars of Mexican descent in history.

            Why the hate?
