unnessecerely, Vitaly, in my opinion, had very technical style. He fought well on outside, utilised jab and parries, was always balanced and met many of the criteria of "technical" style. But was he conservative?

Easily, his technique was unorthodox and at times it looked straight up funny, but if you look closely, he did everything that qualified is style as technical.
Same way is Tszyu. Many consider him a slugger but he really was a masterboxer, all of his punches were textbook, he always fought at the right distance, etc.

Vitali always struck me as a guy who knew his limitations, and was intelligent enough not to take alot of chances but that pawing jab of his was attrotious. He struck me as athletic but his skills weren't very polished. I'm sorry but I think you may be confusing ring intelligence with technique. I don't know. I take your point, but I disagree.

I agree with you about Tszyu. He had killer. His left hook/uppercut whatever the hell you want to call that thing was a thing of beauty.

a technical fighter to me doesn't have to poccess the nicest looking jab or straight right or left hand or hook or cross, ect. to me the most technical fighter in the sport today is floyd mayweather. he uses his tools very effectively and hardly wastes many punches which is another triat in being a technical fighter imo. accuracy is another trait which he pocesses as well. defense is an important trait in being a technical fighter which includes countering, good blocking, and slipping punches well. floyd has this as well as toney, the two best imo although floyd is always in better condition that toney. another trait is ring generaliship, knowing where you're at most of the time in the ring, whether you have to fight off the ropes or in the middle of the ring or if a fighter is pressuring you. again, floyd is the best at this imo. good stamina and endurance in the ring helps to become a technical fighter. i considered myself a great technician in the ring and when i trained which i still do train sometimes, but not too much anymore. body movement, adapting to fighting styles during fights, accentuating your tools effectively even if you're not known as a puncher, although it wouldn't hurt to one. the most important trait in bring a technical fighter imo besides training, and defense, is the confidence in doing all of this as well as the patience in the ring, because that is where your skill really feeds off of. havng patience and confident in your abilities in any fight and fighting a smart fight. floyd again has all of these traits imo as well as speed, agaility, decent power, great defense, great knowledge in the ring, great timing, accuracy, ring presence, conditioning, shows patience in his fights, adaptation to his opponents, being able to fight his fight, allowing opponents to come to him and setting them up, great strategies during the fights. all of these triats make you not only a technical fighter but a great technical fighter imo.

high-guard defense (both gloves on the sides of the face), good balance and lateral movement (head and feet).

throws the straight jab to set-up combos

                  Here's my own interpretion of what is a technical fighter . . . .

As the rootword (technique) canotes . . . it's got to be a fighter who does not rely solely on power and speed but on his his skills and timing. A fighter who cannot be dragged by the opponent to fight his fight plan. A kind of fighter who can effective impose on any opponent and be able to do what ever it takes to win fights.

And that being said . . . I'll say Ali is the concrete example. The guy can be a boxer, a brawler, a puncher or a counter puncher if needed to.

Mikkel Kessler comes to mind. This guy is text-book technical and he isn't boring either. Same with Manuel Mrquez.
