    how can you tell if a boxer has a technical style?

    hi I'm new here, and I know only certain things about boxing, so please bare with me when I ask you this. Okay, I know what a puncher looks like when I see one, but how can you tell if a boxer is using a technical style? For some reason I can't tell, sounds like a ****** question I know, but once again I'm new to boxing. anyway, were fighters like Ali, Robinson, and Louis technical fighters? just wondering.

    Robinson and Louis, yes. Ali was more of a pugilistic artist; but technically speaking, I suppose he would fit into that category as well, though not as technically knowledgeable as Louis and Robinson.

    Welcome aboard.

      Uses jab to set up combos and fight on outside. Utilises parries and defense, moves well and is fleetfooted(although not alwyas, Tyson and Louis were flatfooted)Throws compact hooks and straight crosses. These are some but not all signs of technical style.

        If I had to put the answer in one sentence....that would be it.

          Technical fighters are also great defensive fighters.

            A technical fighter is not always spectacular at both defense and offense.

            A good example of a VERY technical offensive minded fighter was Alexis Arguello. He was the most technical puncher I have viewed outside of Joe Louis. Every punch was straight, compact and hard. He used a sharp jab to set up punches in combination and rarely wasted punches. He sat down on his power shots and always used his whole body to get leverage on his punches. He carried his power up several weight classes because his technique was so good that it translated with bigger guys.

            The most technically sound fighter today is Floyd Mayweather. He does everything like it came out of a textbook, but he's also so physically gifted that it really puts his him ahead of his peers.

              I personally think JMM is a more technically sound fighter then Floyd.

                To be honest both Barrera and JMM impress me more with their skill then Floyd, Floyd is just younger and more talented, he relies more on his amazing reflexes.

                    Technical = Ultra Conservative.
