Banks aims to bring cruiserweight title back to Detroit..

here is an article from todays detroit free press about the top american heavyweight prospect Johnathon Banks... he is fighting as a cruiserweight now but aims to win the WBO cruiserweight title in 2007 before moving to heavy...

for the record, johnathon banks KTFO david haye... 8 days a week

    When: 7:15 p.m. Saturday (doors open at 5:30 p.m.).
Where: Bert's Warehouse Theater, 2739 Russell St., Detroit.

Main event: Johnathon Banks (12-0, 9 KOs), Detroit, vs. Sebastian Hill (10-13-1, 6 KOs), Houston, cruiserweights.

Bruising Detroit cruiserweight Johnathon Banks got a taste of his own medicine when Cuban-born Eliseo Castillo decked him twice in the first round of their fight in New York in July.

Banks (12-0, 9 KOs), who has a devastating left hook and seven first-round wins, climbed from the canvas, cleared his head and went to work.

In Round 4, Banks hit Castillo (20-2-1, 15 KOs) with jolting jabs and finished him off with a thundering right hand.

The win protected his undefeated record and established him as one of the most dangerous fighters in the 200-pound division.

Saturday night, Banks meets Houston's Sebastian Hill for a second time on a pro-am card at Bert's Warehouse Theater in Detroit's Eastern Market.

He should handle Hill (10-13-1, 6 KOs) easily, based on their first fight at Joe Louis Arena in March, when Banks scored a first-round TKO. But Banks isn't taking his opponent lightly.

"I feel good about the fight, but you have to respect every opponent," said the 24-year-old Banks, who is trained by Emanuel Steward. "I set Hill up with jabs and hit him with a left hook in the first fight. But you never know what he might do this time."

Banks hopes to fight for a WBO title in 2007 and said he's set to bring a world championship back to Detroit.

He has been the chief sparring partner of Wladimir Klitschko, also trained by Steward, for some time, training with the big Ukrainian in camp in Pennsylvania and gaining a lot of ring savvy.

"Many of Wladimir's sparring partners end up with black eyes," Banks said. "I haven't received one yet, but he's taught me a heck of a lot."

When in town, Banks has been training at the Dearborn Kronk, following the closure of the original Kronk Gym in Detroit. Banks, like many others, feels displaced.

"It's a sad thing," Banks said of the Kronk's demise. "It's a slap in the face. The Kronk brought a lot of fame and fortune to the city and now it could be demolished. Emanuel put half his life into the place and it could be gone tomorrow."

Banks says he'll be fighting for the Kronk and Detroit in his quest for a world title.

"I want to breathe life into the cruiserweight (200-pound) division and win for the city and Kronk," he said. "I can't ease up no

Haye knocks this fellow out 586 times a year.................

Seems like he'd prefer to fight Maccarinelli though. Maccarinelli is very powerful with one shot KO power (probably slightly less powerful than Haye though).

If he wants the WBO he isn't going to face Haye though (at least until they're heavyweights). Haye wants the WBC/WBA before he moves up.

eliseo castillo is a better victory than anyone haye has beaten at this point. banks has a better trainer, better amateur background and hes just an all around tougher, well rounded, better conditioned fighter, plus he has as much power in his left hook as any cruiserweight ive ever seen.

not to mention banks has shown the ability to get knocked down get up and come back and win, unlike haye, who has already folded like a tent and been stopped by a 40 year old .

im basing this on having seen them both at least 3 times, have you ever seen banks fight? i doubt it.

You say that Banks had a better amateur record? You're wrong. Haye was a World Silver Medallist, losing to a top notch Cuban (Odlanier Solis, 3 times world amateur champion, Olympic Champion).

I'm loving your arrogance by the way, very classy stuff, every time this Banks fellow is mentioned you bring up David Haye. You're like the Kessler fans: Ob-****ing-sessed.

You say that Haye folded against a 40 year old? True, but he has learnt from that. Banks has never fought anyone as good as that 40 year old.

I've never seen Bnks fight, he is just a prospect so none of his fights have been shown over here. Haye is a contender now and a couple of years ahead of Banks. Banks almost certainly isn't as powerful as David Haye though.

id say that eliseo castillo (top cuban amateur), who defeated michael moorer as a heavyweight, qualifies as an opponent (only pro loss to wladamir klitschko) on the level of a past his prime thompson, i guess its a matter of opinion.

banks will fight for a world title this year, as will haye, so i dont see how haye can be years ahead... in actuality banks is two years younger and since he is in line for a title shot he is actually a couple years ahead if anything

Actually, I would look forward to a fight between Banks and Maccaroni, it would be a good fight, hopefully from the Excel Centre in london.

If you reckon that Banks has fought better competition than Haye you're crazy.

Haye will fight for a proper world championship title this year. Banks may fight for Maccarinelli's fairly bogus belt (WBO is credible enough, but this particular Cruiserweight title isn't).

How so? You could easily argue the Hobson fight was for the vacant title if you put as little credence into interim titles as I do. A generally weak division granted, but you'd have to put Maccarinelli near the top of the list.

Banks impressed in the Castillo fight, the guy was out on his feet in the 1st round and he turns around and wins the fight on stoppage, what a fight, the dude has a bright future...
