When Don King was on the Chris Rock Show...Does boxing Need Promoters?

I haven't looked to see if there was a clip on youtube, so I will check that later, but it was on HBO the other night (rerun from years ago)...anyway, Chris Rock asked Don King, "Why does boxing need Promoters?" "No other sports have Promoters, why do boxers need them?" "Is it because boxer's aren't to bright?" -Chris Rock

I don't see why certain boxers need them, especially if they have the fighting style and hype coming out of the Olympics...all you have to do is fight more often and get on ESPN or regular television...you have to give the people what they want.

According to Mayweather, Promoters get 33% of a fighter's purse...that is crazy, especially considering Uncle Same will take 35-50%.

Agents in the NFL and maybe even in MLB, I think they get between 1 to 3% of an athletes negotiated contract.

Chris also mentioned about Tyson: "How come Mike went down hill when he went with you?" "He was "IRON MIKE", then he went with you and he was crawling on the floor for his mouth-piece" -Chris Rock

They also talked about paying off the jury (for trial)...that was pretty funny, and disturbing.

    What's your thoughts?

    Does boxing really need Promoters?

Well, because there is no league, no home stadium or arena. The sport is done on an event-by-event basis. Certain promoters even get exclusive deals with certain venues. Boxing is very different from other sports, with hometown teams and hometown arenas/stadiums. I mean, it's a whole nother world.

        What about Sugar Ray Leonard?

He just hired a Lawyer to negotiate his contracts.

Not sure about Ray Robinson, anybody know?

All you need is an agent, and a Lawyer, not a promoter.

For 33% you can hire a person to do that job for less.

You can hire people to do the job, and negotiate the cost...Promoters just show you there price and expect you to pay up.

You just need to educated yourself on business...it would help to be well-rounded in education.

****, Al Capone ran one of the most profitable businesses of his time, and he was educated on the streets...I think he hired a ***ish accountant (a must), and ran his business like the Romans ran there Empire.

Get somebody to go to your fights and record them...put your fights on "*******", "Youtube", and send copies out to people.

Jimmy Jacobs and Bill Cayton did this: they made copies for everybody to see this young kid from New York named Mike Tyson, the rest is history...of course it helps to be good
