I dont think there is a "new" Winky. That was just some bull the commentators were spouting because they new they had a predictable 12 rounder to call and wanted to sound smart as they filled the air.
He's shown steady changes and refinement over the years. Especially the last two or three years I think he just knows he cannot move as much as he could when he was younger. He also knows his D good (I'd say phenomenal) so he's decided he can sit in the pocket more. I dont think it was some concious decision as much as natural progression.
