Where is the "new" Winky Wright headed in his career? At his age, with the strong opposition he has faced, obviously it is all winding down for him. Not too many fights left. Not too much to prove. But the peek-a-boo defensive fighter that was knocked for not throwing enough had a punch output of over 1,000 punches in his fight last night with Ike Quartey.
The way Winky fights now is indicative of his mind-frame. He knows his career is almost over and he's willing to trade on the inside, take some hits to give some. He has a solid chin. Still, his power is not a strong point of his- it is unlikely he will ever knock the men in front of him out. Especially not from one punch. So, even though he is fighting harder battles- is it going to gain him respect? Can he duke it out like he did against Quartey and, without hurting a fighter much, gain the respect he desires?
Winky was less defensive and, to me, looked to fight at more awkward angles than ever. He was no Emmanuel Augustus but, at times, he looked to have the legs of drunk. His style has always been a bit like that- but now it is very noticeable. He does not set well to punch, and it contributes to his lack of power. So, while Wright is willing to battle a bit more he can't really close the show. This might be a dangerous style for him to take.
Does anyone else notice a change over the last few fights from Winky? A change wrought by age or an evolving mindset? Where is this new Wright headed? To the canvas? To another championship before he retires?
Is he fighting De la Hoya? Will he win? Is he rematching Taylor- will he take that title? Where is our "new" Winky Wright headed before he walks out the door and into retirement?
