Trainer Freddie Roach has expressed preference for Golden Boy Promotions (GBP) over Top Rank Inc. as the promoter for Filipino boxing sensation Manny Pacquiao.
In an overseas interview with this writer, Roach said that GBP, owned by boxing superstar Oscar Dela Hoya, has all the opponents they want for Pacquiao.
“I’m not a lawyer but I believe Golden Boy Promotions owns the promotional rights over Manny because they made Manny sign with them first before Top Rank came up with their offer” said Roach in a call from his Wild Card Gym in California “And besides, Golden Boy has all the fighters we want to face.”
Roach was referring to several marquee fighters being promoted by GBP namely Joan Guzman, Juan Manuel Marquez and Marco Antonio Barrera.
Barrera is the current World Boxing Council (WBC) superfeatherweight champion while Guzman holds the World Boxing Organization (WBO) tiara.
Pacquiao scored a smashing 11th round TKO win over Barrera.
Marquez recently acquired the WBO interim featherweight crown which he recently defended versus Jimrex Jaca via 9th round knockout in Texas.
Marquez survived three first round knockdowns to score a draw verdict versus Pacquiao on May 2004.
Roach believes that Arum does not have a top caliber fighter that can give Pacquiao not only a marquee fight but also a seven-figure fight purse.
“I heard Arum wants Manny to fight Humberto Soto next March in Macau and Soto is not really a popular fighter right now,” said Roach in the same interview.
Moments after Pacquiao’s emphatic 3rd round knockout victory over Mexican icon Erik Morales last weekend, Top Rank Inc. president Bob Arum announced that he had signed a four-year contract to promote Pacquiao.
About two months prior to Arum’s shocking announcement, Dela Hoya signed a seven-fight pact with Pacquiao.
De La Hoya recently filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles against Top Rank for interference with what they claim as “existing, fully negotiated and executed promotional agreement with Manny Pacquiao”.
“We believe that Manny has been ill advised to enter into another agreement. We believe further that Manny's advisors Michael Koncz and Wakee Salud and his attorney Franklin Gacal have conspired against Golden Boy and induced Manny to breach his agreement,” said GBP vice-president Eric Gomez.
Gomez disclosed that apart from their lawsuit against Arum, they are also preparing follow-up lawsuits against Koncz, Salud and Gacal.
“Golden Boy is proud to have Manny as part of its team and we are looking forward to bring Manny the best, biggest and most lucrative fights going forward,” added Gomez.
In the same email, Gomez said that they are still hopeful Pacquiao will recognize that he is being surrounded by individuals who do not have his best interest at heart.

Gomez disclosed that De La Hoya would be pleased to sit down with Pacquiao “man to man and fighter to fighter” to set things straight.
Reports have it that Arum has also filed a countersuit against GBP.
