How Far Can Cleverly Go?

At Cruiserweight the best he can hope for is to win the British, European and Commonwealth titles and dominate the Cruiserweight scene at domestic level, as far as beating the likes of Lebedev, Huck, Hernandez and Włodarczyk goes, I can't see it.

Cleverly wasn't a hard puncher at light heavyweight never mind cruiserweight, he fought completely the wrong fight against Kovalev, he should have danced round him, made him miss, counter punch, slip, slide, bob and weave, but he instead choose to stand toe to toe with a knockout specialist and he paid the price.

I don't get why people expected him to do this going into the fight. Its not his style. Hes never shown hes got the tools to do this & Kovalev proved he is far superior at range & mid-range.
It was just a horrible style match up, I am not sure why he/his team opted for it.

I am not so sure why people think the Cruiserweight division isn't strong, maybe its because their isn't no real elite fighter(s) there and they all seem to match up well/be quite equally matched.

Maybe its because a lot of the talent has recently lost but that is what happens when the top guys continually face each other.

Its a strong division in my eyes and there is a lot of good fighters there.

I just can't see Cleverly having any real success there. Its like before he fought Kovalev people seemingly was and still are under the impression hes a cagey, pure boxer, hes not. He is a guy who likes to overwhelm opponents at close-mid and outwork them. Hes a brawler really with a good workrate & little power.

You make a good point with regard to his style and i agree now with you saying he likes to overwhelm he likes high workrate i think alot of people including my self felt he was smarter or could of fought alot smarter in the kovalev fight,his jab when its popping is really nice he has speed he has height range his balance is good i didnt think he was great in the bellew fight mostly due to bellew giving it a right go but he showed really good boxing ability in that close fight i just dont understand why he didnt try to box kovalev i guarantee you it wasnt the game plan.

The Cruiserweight division is unlikely to ever get the credit it deserves, it has produced some great fights and of course some great fighters, it just isn't all that popular, most casual boxing fans would struggle to name a single Cruiserweight which is a shame because guys like Marco Huck, Yoan Pablo Hernandez, Denis Lebedev, Krzysztof Wlodarczyk, Firat Arslan, Grigory Drozd and even Ola Afolabi are all solid fighters.

And like I said, I cant see Cleverly causing any of them too many problems. Afolabi would be the only one out of that group he would have any chance of beating and even then I wouldn't bet any money on it.

He should stick at light heavyweight, I think he's being a bit drastic moving up in weight class, he should challenge Enzo Maccarinelli for the Commonwealth title, two Welshmen who are both former world champions, it would be a big fight in Britain and a win would give Cleverly that wee confidence boost that he needs to get back into the mix at world level.
