  • Who Won? Martinez or Murray.

I know there's a few threads on the main page but they tend to be a tad hysterical the day after a fight so I wanted some more enlightened opinions.

    Who did you have winning?

I'll admit I was drunk last night but I scored the fight one round up to Murray. I usually write down my scores but didn't last night (I think I had a beer in each hand) so can't go back & check.

I also think I may have given Murray a 10-8 round for the 2nd knockdown which was wrong of me - even though the ref made a mistake (or did he?).

Either way, ever since this fight got made I thought it was winnable for Murray. Sergio has had a great career but the signs have been there in his previous three fights. He still has the speed & skill but the body is starting to unravel a little.

There won't be a rematch so where does Murray go from here? I'd love to see a British Isles tourny (I include Lee in that as it's a geographical term) but I can't see it happening.

That fight to me was a very close one. Martinez didn't look as sharp as he usually does and that can be accredited to how well Murray was defensively. overall I thought it should have probably gone to Murray or a draw!

Also I agree that Martinez's body is starting to breakdown. He to me needs to start relying on more defense then offense and throwing punches that count rather then shear volume if he wants to continue boxing!

People often criticize mayweather for his almost one punch at a time style. I think that is a smart way to fight for an aging fighter if your quick enough to make them count and I think Martinez is quick enough to do so . Less wear and tear on the body while conserving energy to last in the later rounds.

When Murray took over, he took over. The rounds he won were obviously his.
I thought he edged it out in the end and that the slip was a KD.
It wouldn't have madea difference though with them all being 115-112

I liked Letermans card with Sergio up by one or two points! Was not impressed with Murray at all he looked like another club fighter from England!
None of them ever put their ballz down and try to win! They go through the motions! Sergio looked like he didn't spar 5 rounds, he was terrible!
This was a Middleweight Championship of the World FIGHT! It stunk! Ray.

Ray the guy went out in front of 50,000 Argentinians (who have rioted recently when their guy lost) against a guy who was much better than him. His balls were already out.

On the thread i thought Martinez took it by 1 or 2 rounds, he looked horrible though, maybe injuries, maybe age, or maybe wet surface (or all three) but that wasnt anywhere near the Martinez we are used to seeing. Murray did well and had a very good gameplan but he didnt quite have the stamina to make it clear at the end who was on top.

It is what it is, Murray's stock has unquestionably risen and i want to see him in with Macklin, Barker and Lee even more now. None of them are great imo but they are very even matchups

I had it 115-112 to Martinez.

Judging requires the most concentration and it is easier to see the the cleaner punches, but doesn't mean you should discount the many face grazes and touches Martinez was slipping in between Murray's guard.

Iagree with T. Cruise but thats what comes with home town appearances!!
The guy runs.................young people today think thats boxing its NOT!
Boxing is lasterial movement to both sides and getting in & out all with the purpose of being first and not moving backwards. Thats modern day boxing established by people like Gans, Pep, Louis!
Not Sergio running away from his opponent and dropping his hands and mocking his opponent. If there was a great fighter like Robinson to Hagler or Monzon I assure everyone Sergio would have his hands up but he's have his sneakers on too hahahaha!!!! Listen he's good boxer who has very good coordination and distance judging but he is NOT a GREAT Fighter! Stop!
he fought an ordinary guy with avergare skills who tried hard but didn't have the mental strength to over come his fatigue in the ending rounds!

taansend; you'll be hard pressed to find someone on this forum who has more respect and admiration for all fighters than me! I know what it takes to get in there then compete! I know talent levels and certainly could tell when a fighters is giving everything he has!

I don't care for Hopkins style, or Sergio's, Mayweather bores me because he is a huge talent who has more to offer but he doesn't except challenges from opponents and doesn't challenge "himself"! Champions are supposed to challenge themselves!
Did you think Sergio looked good? Tats fine by me because I don't care!

I think the cards were about right, could have been a bit closer I guess ... maybe if murray had come out harder in the first couple of rounds it would have made the difference also Martinez was lucky knockdown number two was ruled a slip

Ray, I'll be harder pressed to find a post from you in which you're not putting a fighter or country down.

It's what you do. It's who you are.

                    own it.
