Frank Warren, And Box Nation

Originally posted by davros2010 View PostBBC did used to show lots of amateur boxing as well as foreign fights.
From 2007:
"...the controller of BBC1 Peter Fincham is again on the ropes after coming under attack by one of boxing's big-hitters and a phalanx of MPs.
Leading promoter Frank Warren believes Mr Fincham has barred the professional sport from being aired on the BBC after he rejected a deal to screen the former Olympic star Amir Khan's future fights.
And a group of MPs has also come out punching against the beleaguered Mr Fincham, asking why professional boxing is no longer seen on the BBC. Ian Stewart, Labour MP for Eccles, and chairman of the all-party parliamentary group on boxing, said in a letter to him: "We believe the BBC, as a public funded body, should be making some coverage of this major sport available to the viewing public." ...
In his response to the panel of MPs, Mr Fincham says he "cannot see boxing on BBC1 in the immediate future". But he adds: "It is something we will look at from time to time and is a decision for the director of sport."
However, Mr Warren insists that he had reached an agreement with the BBC head of sport, Roger Mosey, to show Khan's fights but this was overruled by Mr Fincham, who termed boxing "a dangerous sport".
Mr Warren said: "I am convinced Fincham is anti-boxing. There is no logical explanation why one of the biggest sports in Britain should not be seen on the BBC. Over the years the BBC's attitude towards boxing has always puzzled me. I just don't think it sits well with the luvvies in suits who make the decisions."
BBC insiders confirm that Mr Fincham's distaste for professional boxing is well known within the corporation and believe there is little likelihood of it being shown again while he is in charge....

No doubt when boxing does have "free" coverage it does a lot to help boost the popularity and profile of the sport.
But the free channels haven't been showing it. (Although it's good of course that Tyson Fury is recently getting shown on channel 5.)
Fans weren't happy about Setanta going down I seem to remember. And Box Nation can be better than they ever were, assuming they can pick up quite a few American fights along with the British and German stuff.Last edited by Decypher; 10-03-2011, 07:22 AM.

ffs, i set sky plus to record the fights, and the recording stopped 2 mins into rd 1 of the Hopkins fight!
Was the show running late or something?
I managed to avoid seeing the results until i searched for a link to watch the fight and spoiled it for myself
