TONY BELLEW is on the verge of signing for a world title fight against Nathan Cleverly.
The British and Commonwealth light-heavyweight champion has verbally agreed to meet the WBO ruler on October 15 at the city’s ECHO Arena.
Cleverly is understood to have also agreed to the showdown in principle with only a few minor details to be ironed out before both men put pen to paper.
The fight is expected to be officially finalised by the end of the week when papers are issued to both boxers.
Bellew has been locked in negotiations with promoter Frank Warren over the Cleverly bout for the best part of two weeks, even though a British title defence against Paul David had been pencilled in for September 17 at The Olympia.
The fight with David was officially removed from the bill on Tuesday night as finally Warren and Bellew reached an agreement on what is certain to be the biggest pay day of the 28-year-old’s 16-fight professional career.
In a recent interview, Cleverly revealed he was ready to accept the Bellew challenge.
“We’re two undefeated guys and we both want to prove we’re the best,” said the 24-year-old.
