  • Gavin Rees cool on Devon Alexander title tilt in Vegas

Ex-world champion Gavin Rees' camp have moved to dampen talk of a shock tilt at WBC light-welterweight champion Devon Alexander in Las Vegas on 6 March.

IBF champion Juan Urango is pencilled in for a unification clash against Alexander at Treasure Island Casino.

Should that fall through, ex-WBA champion Rees is a possible stand-in.

Preliminary talks have been held between Don King, the promoter of the Vegas show, and Calzaghe Promotions, who manage Newbridge's Rees, 29.

Saint Louis' Alexander, 22, would be a formidable opponent, the southpaw known as Alexander the Great having won all 19 of his fights, 12 by stoppage.

He claimed the vacant WBC title with a win over Sheffield's Junior Witter last August.

Rees is in buoyant mood after his victory in last month's Prizefighter light-welterweight show at the Olympia National Hall in London.

He had planned to step back down to lightweight, targeting a domestic title before moving back to world level.

Rees held the WBA light-welterweight title from 2007-8, losing it to Andriy Kotelnik who went on to lose the belt to Amir Khan.

The Kotelnik defeat was the only reversal for Rees in 32 professional fights, but weight problems have dogged his career and many feel that the 5ft 7ins Welshman would be more effective in a lower weight division.

Rees is trained by Enzo Calzaghe and has years of training experience with Joe Calzaghe under his belt.

I really hope that doesn't happen.

Rees hasn't earned a shot and wouldn't win were he to get one.

He should be moving down in weight (as the article mentions) but if not then McCloskey would be a good opponent for him. IMO McCloskey would win that one but it's a good fight but both of them.

Rees is in a talented division. He should perhaps go into the Euro circuit to get a couple of good wins under his belt first, because to be honest, he wasn't really up against much in Prizefighter.

beat me to it, I wanted McCloskey to fight the winner of the prizefighter, and have been calling for Rees McCloskey in 2010. It would be a good fight, and McCloskey's toughest fight to date. I too think he would win, and would put McCloskey in contention for a title shot, maybe against Khan if Warren has any say in it..........

What has REES done to deserve a world title shot? WIn the prizefighter event lol. This means that Audley shud get a shot at Vitali. This sucks, rees needs to get in the line, at the back of the queue

I don't really think Ree's is world level, his pressure fighting is OK against a lot of the British opponents though I could see him getting picked off by these much better light welterweights boxers at the top level.

Don't matter what he's done these days fighters don't fight enough in my opinion, if you look at who gets a shot it ain't even about Mandatories anymore because if you read the sanctioning body rules they can mandate anyone they want to increase the marketability of their organization. Just Terrible. If Rees wants to fight I say go for it who else is screaming the mans name. Hatton ain't going to fight him nor Pacman nor Bradley. I wonder if Lamont Peterson would, he probably needs a break after the beatdown he received from Bradley.

Rees needs to move down to 135.

He looked way out of his depth against Kotelnik.
