The Top 5 Reasons You Can't Blame Mike Tyson for the breakup of "Team Tyson"

Hello, I'm butterfly1964, and Welcome to The Top Five Reasons You Can't Blame. A show that takes a look at boxing personalities and establishments who have made questionable decisions, controversial comments, or unpopular stances, and take a deeper look into these matters. My job is not to further villify these individuals, but to challenge conventional wisdom, and reexamine what has been accepted as fact. In this episode I'm counting down the top 5 reasons why you can't blame Mike Tyson for the breakup of "Team Tyson". Many thought that Tyson, Rooney and company were going all the way to the top, and Tyson had a promising career that would almost guarantee him a number one spot of top heavyweight champions of all-time. But After Tyson's demolition of Michael Spinks in 1988, Tyson sent the Catskill people packing, and from then things started to go downhill for the heavyweight champion. Before I count down the reasons why you can't blame Tyson, here's a look back at the promise of "Team Tyson" to Iron Mike, and boxing itself.

This was the second coming of the next great exciting heavyweight champion. This was a new, exciting Dempsey, Louis kind of fighter. He was the answer to Ali ten years before, and Tyson was going to go on this long reign as champion and be invincible.
When Cus D'Amato discvered Tyson, he trained him and taught him and schooled him on everything he should know. Then he burst on the scene and was immediately making an impact on the boxing world.
As soon as Rooney left, there was an immediate difference. He started to lose that invncibity in the bruno fight, and it all was capped off against Buster Douglass.

To get rid of the people that got you to where you are and that made you is something far past ******!
In 1991, Tyson was accused and convicted of the **** of Desiree Wahington.

Tyson didn't listen to anyone. To Tyson it was "my way or the highway".
Tyson didn't know what was good for him, and getting rid of the Catskill team was the worst thing that ever happened to him.

Before I count down the top 5 reasons why you can't blame Mike Tyson for the Breakup of "Team Tyson", here's a reason that didn't make the top five. I call it, "The Best of the Rest".

    Best of the Rest

Donald Trump - The famous (or infamous) multi-billionaire was offered to be a shareholder in Tyson's management, and to market Tyson's business deals and fight deals. However, "The Donald" respectfully declined.

If Trump had been involved in Mike Tyson's affairs, then he would have had a hand in making sure that Tyson was on track, and maybe he would have seen the light and not have done all the things that he did, including firing Kevin Rooney.

Coming up next, we'll strat the countdown of The Top Five Reasons You Can't Blame Tyson.

Welcome back to "The Top 5 Reasons You Can't Blame Mike Tyson for the Breakup of "Team Tyson".

Now we are ready for the countdown, starting with Reason #5.

5: The Death of Cus D'Amato - The legendary trainer took Tyson under his wing when he was 12, and taught him the finer points of the Sweet Science. However, it was much more than that.

Not only did Cus train young Mike, but he also gave him a home, seeing as how he was an orphan, and acted as a father figure for Tyson.

Tyson would always respect Cus if he didn't respect anybody else. Once Cus died, Tyson had no father figure anymore, and he felt he was free to do anything he wanted.
[quote]There's no way that Tyson would have gotten rid of "Team Tyson" if Cus was still alive.

Had enough? If not, here's Reason #4.

4: Tyson Felt Constrained - In Tyson's early career, he was training often and fighting nearly every other week. He had an extremely hectic schedule and had to abide by a lot of rules that Rooney and Company set up.

It's natural for someone to suddenly hit a wall, when they are being bombarded by responsibilities and many things that they feel are not necessary.
Something like that happened to Joe Louis. When Joe Louis had to abide by all these rules to make the black race look good, he sort of rebelled by going out with a lot of white woman and running around ******** and things like that. Tyson, like Louis probably just needed some "me" time, and he felt that the best way he would get that was to just get rid of Rooney, so he wouldn't feel constrained.
You can't blame Tyson entirely, because I can't imagine many boxers in history that had the kind of pressure that Tyson had when he was still a very young man!

Stay tuned for more of our countdown of the top 5 reasons you can't blame Mike Tyson for the Breakup of "Team Tyson".

You're watching The Top 5 Reasons You Can't Blame Mike Tyson for the Breakup of "Team Tyson"

Let's continue the countdown. Reason #3.

3: Robyn Givens - The actor whom Tyson was married to from 1988 to 1989, greatly influenced the impressionable 21 year old. She and her mother acted as leeches and was only there for the money.

Tyson actually loved her. He wasn't really invlolved with women before her, and he thought she loved her too, but it turns out she was just using him and dare i say it, golddigger!
She convinced Tyson to do whatever he wanted to do, or what ever she wanted, and Tyson then thought of rooney as an outside force, as opposed to someone that was helping him. For that you can't really blame Tyson.
She didn't love him! She loved his money!

How did that grab you? If you are still unsure, then try this one on for size, Reason #2.

2: Tyson Was Young - Tyson at 20 was the youngest heavyweight champion in history, and at 21, many people considered him to be at his peak. However, his mind was still young, and impressionable.

If Tyson was in his late 20s or early 30s, then maybe you could say that he could take full responsibility for his actions. But he still had a juvenile state of mind.
This is not the first time, boxers were influenced at young ages. When Ali was about the same age as Tyson, he was influenced by the NOI and was brainwashed by them. Joe Louis at about 21 or 22 had distractions that let to his knockout loss to Max Schmeling. This is not suprising, because whenever people are pushed into fame at a young age, you can't expect them to handle it as an adult would.
tyson was 20, 21, 22. He's a kid! And you can't really blame a kid for making kid mistakes!

Stay tuned for the Number 1 Reason why you can't blame Mike Tyson for the Breakup of "Team Tyson".

We're counting down The Top 5 Reasons You Can't Blame Mike Tyson for the Breakup of "Team Tyson". Before we get to the top reason, here's a list of what we have so far.

Number 5: The Death of Cus D'Amato - Without Cus, there's no guidance

Number 4: Tyson Felt Constrained - Mike simply couldn't handle the pressure placed on him

Number 3: Robin Givens - Givens influenced Tyson to do what she wanted, including taking any lesson from the Catskill team

        and...

Number 2: Tyson Was Young - Tyson wasn't mentally mature yet

We all ask ourselves about Tyson. About what could have been, should have been, etc. But by far, one thing in Tyson's life definetely should not have been. Reason #1.

1: Don King - King's entire career as a boxing promoter is a swarm of controversiy and shadiness. This includes the career of Mike Tyson.

The bottom line is that if Don King never existed, there would be no fall of Mike Tyson, no firing of Kevin Rooney, and it would have been a storybook ending to the career of Mike Tyson. However, Don King does exist.
Don King never was in Tyson's best interest, never wanted anything good for him. He just wanted to promote him to make some money. He bought Tyson all these things and hooked Tyson up to these huge events and got him all this exposure, and women, and cars and everything, but no set of morals, of ideals, of work ethic, you know the things that would work well for Tyson in the long run.
Once Tyson lost to Buster douglass, he didn't care, he was celebrating in Buster douglass' corner!
You can't help but to admit that Don King was good for boxing, but you also can't help but to admit that Don King is definetely not good for boxers.
Imagine if someone like Don King was around during Joe Louis' time or a young Cassius Clay or Jack Dempsey's time. They might not have turned out to be the great fighters we now know them as.
You can't blame Tyson at all, because all the blame rests solely on the shoulders of Don King himself!

That will do it for this edition of "The Top 5 Reasons You Can't Blame". Maybe I've changed your mind. Maybe not. But hopefully, you'll look at this issue in a different light. I'm butterfly1964, thanks for watching.

In October of 2006, Tyson began his "Mike Tyson World Tour", boxing four rounds with Corrie Sanders.

The crowd was dissatisfied at Tyson's refusing to knock his opponent out.

This is a good breakdown of his downfall. Even though I believe that many of the decisions made were still up to him (no matter how impressionable), this is a testament to one of the saddest endings of the most promising career in boxing, if not sports history. Good work butterfly.

                    Nice effort as always, but...

I have no choice but to give you an "F" for your work on this one, Butterfly, or at the very most you get an "Incomplete", and that's only because not once did you mention the actual given reason(s) as to why Tyson sacked Rooney, nor did you even give a hint to it.
