I’m not a doctor so I cannot say whether it was this or that or a combination of several factors that has caused his condition, but I generally believe that sparring is highly underrated as a cause for brain damage.

Brutal sparring sessions can of course contribute to brain damage.

If he heard through the boxing g****vine about Benitez getting severely injured by a beating with pipes then he wouldn't necessarily have to be a doctor.

It’s possible. I wouldn’t bet my house on it though. Remember also that many boxers live in denial by saying the sport doesn’t give brain damage, so people from the industry often downplay the risks.

That being said, breland himself stopped his career rather early because he saw an older boxer getting pugilistic dementia and he decided that he himself wouldn’t end up like that. I can’t remember who that boxer was (dementia? Lol), but that does tell that breland is very much aware of the dangers. He also threw in the towel on wilder as we all know.

So breland telling the reason for Benitez brain damage could very well be hear say from other people in the industry idk.

When someone is slurring their words and is punch drunk, its usually from some major league concussion, and they never gave it time to heal.

Especially with older fighters, they were fighting for money and their managers really didn't care that much about the fighters health.

In Robinsons book, in the ams he said a kid got knocked out and could barely stand up in the change room. his manager was dumping water on him and telling him he had to fight again tommorow (I forget, but a short amount of time). and a doctor yelled at him and said he had to take a few weeks off. **** like that

Jake Lamotta was invovled in brutal wars his entire career, but you didnt see him constantly lose his legs or get koed cold. he seemed to keep his marbles. Hearns on the other hand, may have got hit less but was being shook and wobbled every single fight after Hagler.

Point hog Nelson might have this one right, lads. I have long suspected that many boxers incur brain damage and punch susceptibility as youngsters, with Roy Jones being a premier example. Roy knew long before we did that as soon as he was hit squarely with a good punch he would drink deeply from the river Lethe, and sure enough Roy was right....
