I feel the same way about Hearns when people talk about how good he was at MW. I think you need a bit more of work to evaluate at a given weight before you can make an accurate analysis about ability at a specific weight.

That isnt to write we couldnt extrapolate a pretty accurate assessment, but if we are being fair more sample size is required.
Canelo's resume at middleweight is sparse, I agree.

Golovkin's is extensive but it's mostly a bunch of dreck. So how much does that tell us really? I feel the same about Hopkins' lengthy run. Although he does have slightly more meat on the bone.

He gave up the because golovkin was mandatory and the WBC were forced into stripping him.

All Canelo early titles at traditional middle with next day fight weights at light heavy.

Ggg defo top15. Top middle guys are greb, langford, hagler, srr. Monzon. After that youve got a group where ggg sits including ketchel, walker, hopkins, la motta etc so he could be top ten

i think if GGG can reach 3 top contender defences then I would rank him alongside other guys who made three top contender defences.
That definitely means him breaking into top 50.
Thing is I'm not sure being placed 50 or so should mean you are an all time great. All time greats should be the top echelon.

Looking at the guys Golovkin has beaten at 160 are there any that you wouldn't pick George Benton or Hurricane Carter to beat as well?

GGG made the mistake of spending too much time facing everyone from 154 to 168, if he had stayed at 160 then of course he'd be higher.

I think this speaks to the differences people use in regards to criteria in evaluating.

You look at it in the way implied above, judging GGG by the fighters he has beat and citing who else could have beaten them. I would look at the MWs i have ranked 15th, 14th, 13th, etc all time, and think would i pick them to beat GGG?

Its the difference between evaluating the fighter and evaluating the resume. I am certain that many more people do it your way, and i will be derided for citing mine. But how i do it is the way i prefer.
