  • How Did Joe Calzaghe Duck Roy Jones ?

Hello everybody this is my first post.

I'm a young boxing fan who loves to learn about the history. I have often heard that Joe Calzaghe ducked Roy Jones and hid behind his WBO Belt (Then not as highly regarded) in order to not fight the top opposition.

Being that Roy was already at light heavyweight by the time Joe Calzaghe became a factor at super middleweight how exactly did Calzaghe duck him?

Do people mean that Roy would be willing to go back down to 168 in order to make a fight with Calzaghe?

Keep in mind that I was too young to be following boxing at that point and don't know all the history. Thanks.

They managed to avoid each other since neither of them was willing to travel across the pond to face the other.

Roy would have funked Calzaghe up. Slapsy Joe was nowhere near Roy Jones' skill.............Rockin'

        - -Many boxing fans are a bad combo of stoopid and crazy.

Roy wasn't fighting overseas and Joe locked into a contract with a litigating promoter dominating Brit boxing.

Joe came over as soon as he was able.

They fought in the USA. Calzaghe cut Jones baldy and beat him clean. Yes Calzaghe was 36 and Jones was 39. Neither wanted the fight sooner. 2004 and 2005 were bad years for Jones as he was Ko'd twice and didn't win a fight in these years. I think Calzaghe would have beaten him sooner if they fought.

Correct. Jones would not fight Darius Michalczewski overseas either. I do not think he wanted the fight in the USA either.

I agree Prime Jones is an ATG. Calzaghe like most Euros fought terrible garbage fighters 99% ofbhis career.

Calzaghe openly said he could never beat RJJ in his prime. That's why that fight never happened.

Besides until 2006 Calzaghe was a nonentity holding the WBO title hostage fighting bums. RJJ had been world champ since 92/93. He was on another level to Calzaghe.

Cooooooorect, as The Miz would say. And at least Jones had guys like Hopkins and Toney on his resume. Although it can be argued Jones didn't seek the toughest challenges after that for years, which brings the overall resume down a bit compared to other light heavies and other ATGs.
