Opinion on the Super/Junior Weight Classes

What are your Opinions on the Super/Junior weight classes?

I feel that they are a cash grab from the sanctioning bodies. I can see some sort of merit but if you take away these weight classes there would probably be less guys draining themselves to make weight.

    Your thoughts?

IMO they can do away with 122, 130, 140, 154. Most of the fighters in those divisions are draining themselves to get there anyway.

Speaking of The Ring rankings only, they added the Junior Welterweight and Junior Lightweight divisions in 1962.

The weight difference between Featherweight (126) and Lightweight (135) was nine pounds, and Lightweight (135) and Welterweight (147) was 12 pounds.

But the difference between WW and MW was 13 pounds and MW and LHW was 15 pounds. So I wonder why they hesitated to add divisions here, and instead expanded the lower divisions first.

I personally believe they should have added the Cruiserweight division only, it was needed, but not the others.

I realize it's about more titles, money, ETC.

P.S. I believe either the NYSAC or the NBA (WBA) had added the the Junior WW division sometime in the 1940s. Can anyone confirm this?

P.S.S. The Ring rankings had for a short time added the junior welterweight and junior lightweight divisions for a brief period in the late 1920s, but were dropped in 1931.

          - -Hmmm, U feeling boxing now is it?

Every division past the original open Heavywt division is a Junior division.

              They're wonderful... usually.

Anyone who has Wrestled knows the significance a couple pounds make, especially for the smaller guys.

I don't want to conflate a need for multiple weight divisions with justification for extreme weight cutting. Ringside weigh-ins would probably result in a lot of canned fights, but a two hour window makes sense.

the lower weight divisions are the most necessary ones - to a point. I would keep those, save 154. I would get rid of 105, 108, 115.

That's all based on historic precedent.

Now, that being said, if healthy and fair weight-cutting were enforced, I can imagine that many of the lower weight divisions would disappear on their own. Long gone are the days of Boxing being the way malnourished teenagers make money to feed the family.

I believe it was the late 20's.

Ross comes to mind as the first established true reigning/defending Jr. Lightweight champion.

But of course, this was after the weight classes shifted to their modern limits.
